Position of Director of Bookkeeper, Part-Time

The Bookkeeper is a part-time position that will oversee the church’s financial data and compliance by maintaining accurate books on accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and daily financial entries and reconciliations. They will perform daily accounting tasks such as financial reporting, general ledger entries, and record payments and adjustments.

POSITION REPORTS TO: The Director of Administration, with the Lead Pastor ultimately responsible for all church staff.

POSITION RELATES TO: Board of Trustees, Financial Management Team, Mission Advancement Team

CONGREGATION/MINISTRY COUNCIL RELATIONSHIP: The Board of Trustees is responsible for all lay professional staff as far as terms of any agreements, contracts, covenants, salaries, and evaluations.

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: It is encouraged that the Bookkeeper is at least an Associate Member of Lutheran Church of Hope.

SAFETY AND TRAINING: The Bookkeeper will complete a full-background check, be finger-printed, as well as complete child safety and harassment training modules within 30 days of beginning employment at Lutheran Church of Hope.

REMOTE WORK AND ENVIRONMENT: This position will be a hybrid position of both remote and in-person office, varying based on schedule and intensity of the church’s life and calendar. Requires 2-4 hours onsite per week, minimum.

OVERALL DUTIES

  • Maintain an accurate record of financial transactions
  • Support the processing of donation deposits and receipts
  • Support the preparation bank deposits
  • Enter income/offerings reports into accounting software
  • Support the preparation and processing of payroll
  • Prepare employee tax reports
  • Support the processing of employee change events for payroll and benefits
  • Process accounts payable transactions
  • Prepare and enter journal entries (e.g., online and in-person giving, account interest, dividends, fees, approved fund transfers)
  • Support budget preparation and system entry
  • Support monthly bank account reconciliations
  • Reporting to LCHope staff and elected leadership and supporting reporting to the congregation, both in meetings and via various digital formats (e.g., email)

Work with Lead Pastor and Admin Financial Secretary and Mission Advancement Team on preparation of financials for annual report, end of year financial report, and halfway-through year reports

  • Identifying and supporting bookkeeper-related process and tool improvements, such as migrating to QuickBooks, secure electronic approvals and signatures
  • Support preparation for potential external audits or financial reviews
  • Serve on both Financial Management Team and Mission Advancement Team

RESOURCES

  • Unless there are unusual circumstances, time away should be taken during less intensive times of the church year, and in accordance with the Staff Handbook of Lutheran Church of Hope, all time away will be communicated prior to and approved by the Lead Pastor and/or the Director of Administration
  • Periodic performance reviews will be held
  • Read and understand the Staff Handbook of Lutheran Church of Hope

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associates Degree in Accounting or Business, minimum(Required)
2. Bookkeeping, 1 year (Required), 3 years (Preferred), minimum
3. Non-Profit Bookkeeping (Required)
4. Experience with QuickBooks (Required)
5. Experience with giving software, such as Pushpay (Preferred)
6. Proficient to expert Microsoft Excel skills (Preferred)
7. Experience with the Modified Cash Basis accounting method (Preferred)
8. An understanding or a willingness to learn the Lutheran witness among the one holy catholic and apostolic church (Required)
9. Experience as a “team player” and ability to relate to others with good interpersonal skills (Required)
10. Produce work with a high level of efficiency and accuracy (Required)

COMPENSATION AND CONTINUING EDUCATION:
An hourly compensation rate of $20 per hour
1. 20-30 hours per month
2. Does not include retirement or health benefits
3. Continuing Education funds will be considered by the Board of Trustees on a case- by-case basis
4. Either party may sever this employment agreement by giving 4 weeks (28 days) notice
