POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation™ (CHPP™), a nonprofit organization established in February 2005, has a mission of protecting heirs’ property (HP)—a form of landownership—and promoting the sustainable use of land to provide increased economic benefit to low-wealth families through education, advocacy, legal services, and forestry technical assistance primarily in the counties of Allendale, Bamberg, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Chester, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillion, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Lee, Marlboro, Marion, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter and Williamsburg in South Carolina.

In addition, CHPP™ has a national and regional leadership role in providing expertise on the issue of HP and, ultimately, in developing business models for best practices in the work needed to address the HP issue in all its complexity.

Position Description

CHPP™ is a rapidly growing, results-oriented, small team workplace seeking a smart, energetic, and committed individual to join the Communication Team as the Director of Communication. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer / Chief Operating Officer. This position is responsible for developing and implementing an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of the issue of heirs' property and the needs of historically underserved families and communities to result in brand identity with increased engagement, motivation, and support across the Center's key stakeholder audiences. In addition, this Director position will ensure consistent messaging is used to amplify the Center's work and the impact it is having on landowners and their families in the state, region, and nation. As a member of the Leadership team, this position is responsible for the leadership, management planning, and coordination of communication strategies and actions which promote the mission, vision, and goals of the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation.

Essential Job Duty Functions

Create a brand/marketing/public relations strategy that will allow the Center’s Chief Executive Officer and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted high-level external audiences, including the media, public officials, and key influencers.

Identify and leverage opportunities for strategic communications to key change-agent audiences related to the sector, including, but not limited to, corporate actors, national policy makers, and peer NGOs.

Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by historically underserved landowners (HULOs) and the Center; work with the board and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

Serve as the lead point person or spokesperson with media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization; actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the Center’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.

Manage public image campaigns, spokesperson training, and the creation of social media and communication materials, including talking points, speeches, presentations, and public position statements to increase audience engagement.

Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the Center’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects

· Responsible for managing media events and activities, press and media contacts, public image campaigns, spokesperson training, and the creation of social media and communication materials and public position statements. Often serves as a spokesperson for the organization with the media.

Plan, direct, or coordinate activities designed to create or maintain a favorable public image or raise issue awareness for the Center’s mission, programs, fundraising activities, services and brand. Oversee the continued development and use of the Center’s brand and standards to ensure cross-departmental consistency and integration of the brand.

Lead the implementation of communications activities ranging from thought leadership content and promotions, earned media, digital campaigns and social media, to communications in support of events, as well as internal department, partner and stakeholder communications coordination.

· Create and deliver periodic newsletters to internal and external stakeholders, notifying them of successful projects/initiatives and providing an outlook for the upcoming months.

Collaborate cross-functionally with Outreach, Operations, and Development teams to ensure social media activities are maximally optimized and correctly attributed.

Perform market research to better identify target audiences and needs; utilize research findings to generate leads and maintain consistent reach, awareness, and opportunities for growth for the Center.

Analyze the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and make improvements as needed.

Manage relationships with any communications-related vendors or consultants.

Manage the annual advertising and promotional budget.

Recruit and supervise other communication/public relations staff to support the development and execution of the communications strategy.

Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned or requested by the Chief Executive Officer/Chief Operations Officer

Desired Experience, Education, Skills and Knowledge

· Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training and expertise.

· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in communications and/or marketing; experience must include communications planning and management, marketing and media relations.

· Must be a strong communicator, have excellent written, presentation, oral communications and interpersonal skills.

· Must be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgment and be able to work in an ever-changing environment.

· Must possess the ability to condense complicated issues to content and platforms that can be understood and accessed by a variety of constituents.

· Demonstrated excellence in proof-reading and document production.

· Must be goal-oriented, highly productive, self-motivated and self-managing.

· Strong computer skills including Microsoft suites; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Salesforce is a plus.

· Possess a valid S.C. driver’s license.

· Has a thorough knowledge of practices, policies, procedures, rules and regulations governing the Center.

· Is able to use good judgment in following Center standards and does not deviate from the standards.

· Has a strong commitment and belief in the concept of alternative dispute resolution.

· Has a willingness to engage in outreach work in the project service area.

Compensation

Hiring Range: $64,000 - $70,000

Compensation consists of (1) a base salary that is dependent upon the level of experience and falls within Center Pay Grade 16 ($64,000 - $88,960) and (2) benefits (i.e., paid leave, company paid health and dental insurance, and retirement contribution).
