Job Summary:
The Director of Technology will provide vision and leadership and assume management responsibility for the direction, coordination, integration and implementation of technology across all school district buildings and departments. The Director of Technology will be responsible for planning, purchasing, installing, and maintaining the district’s technology infrastructure, maximizing continuity of services and maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and requirements. We are seeking a candidate who not only brings deep technical expertise and operational experience but truly enjoys working with people, serving others, and seeing kids succeed.
This is a hands-on position with broad responsibilities that range from strategic and long-range planning and implementation of systemwide technology solutions and infrastructure, to occasionally providing general end-user support and training. Experience working in the education field is of significant value as school experience provides an understanding of how technology supports educational outcomes, where technology funding sources can be accessed, and knowledge that a culture of creativity and collaboration is essential to achieving the district’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees security of facilities, access control, security cameras and communication systems, in coordination with other Directors and building administrators.
- Directs the installation of technology systems and tools (e.g. hardware, software, systems, wiring, specialized applications and tools) for the purpose of ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient implementation of technology infrastructure as well as end-user hardware and applications.
- Maintains technology equipment and systems (e.g. servers, IP-based phone system, intercoms, alarms, surveillance cameras, software applications, network infrastructure) for the purpose of ensuring that systems are functioning properly and effectively in support of district administrative and educational operations.
- Manages professional development of all employees in the operation of technology. Builds awareness among employees of available resources and the role of technology in the instruction process.
- Develops and implements disaster recovery and business continuity plans that are an integral part of the District’s technology program.
- Participates with members of the Superintendent's Guiding Coalition to develop a shared vision with long-term perspectives on District goals, to plan for meaningful and effective uses of technology; and provides leadership in creating the vision for how technology will support the District mission, vision, and goals, maintaining Technology Services’ focus on student achievement.
- Manages procurement, inventory, and surplus of technology equipment, systems and related services for the purpose of ensuring that all technology purchases for goods and/or services are consistent with the district’s technology objectives and that equipment is properly inventoried or surplused in a manner consistent with district and state regulations. (e.g., RFPs, purchasing policies)
- Exhibits strong communication skills and demonstrated commitment to fostering a clear vision and understanding of technology-related activities and initiatives.
- Monitors technology budget and expenditures for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate and expenses are within budget limits and board policies are followed.
- Oversees functioning of the technology operations of the district for the purpose of ensuring an effective, efficient and safe environment, where technology equipment and applications are utilized appropriately and efficiently to support essential administrative and educational functions of the district.
- Prepares a wide variety of documents, reports, and materials (e.g. reports, policy and procedure documents, emails, memos, correspondence, budget, specifications, plans and drawings, analysis and test results, and cost estimates) for the purpose of providing necessary information to support district operations, including reporting internally and externally to the state or federal agencies, and other entities as required by the district, state and/or federal regulations.
- Researches outside funding opportunities and grants for the purpose of providing additional funding to enhance technology within the district. Deep knowledge of and experience with the federal E-rate program is highly desirable.
- Supports the implementation of operational and educational technology initiatives (e.g. new systems, educational programs, hardware) for the purpose of assisting with the delivery and implementation of initiatives, providing support and assistance to others, providing oversight of projects and/or training and providing information to others to ensure successful implementation.
- Supervises/manages assigned technology staff (e.g. hiring recommendations, interviewing, training, evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce and meeting operational requirements.
- Works well in a team environment and knows how to create a positive work climate.
- Regularly tests and evaluates hardware, applications, and systems for the purpose of providing feedback for the administrative decision processes, to ensure appropriate acquisition of educational and business technology solutions.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate for the position (Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Management, or other equivalent technical credentials (i.e., CCNA/CCNP/Microsoft Admin Certifications)).
- Minimum 5 years experience in the development, installation, and maintenance of information systems.
- Strong understanding and experience implementing, configuring, and managing network components, not limited to managed switches, management of multiple VLANs on the network, and management of an enterprise wireless network.
- Strong understanding and experience working with MS Active Directory, group policies, security groups, and network login scripting.
- Operational knowledge of MS Windows OS and Microsoft Server and VMWare environments. Experience with Linux/Unix and Mac OS X is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with and work well with all levels within an organization specifically working effectively within the culture and procedures used in educational organizations.
- Highly organized with strong project management skills, and drive to meet district and departmental objectives; ability to manage projects on interrelated timelines.
- Knowledge of classroom technology including projectors, document cameras, sound systems, assistive technologies, etc. preferred.
- Knowledge of student data/school information systems preferred.
- Experience with a variety of cloud platforms, including but not limited to, Google for Education (Google Workspace), Securly/GoGuardian, Clever, Microsoft O365, Onesync.
- Proven ability to negotiate and work with vendors and consultants.
- Proven ability to work effectively with parents, community, and staff on various organization-wide committees, and Technology Advisory Committees.
- Experience directing a department/supervising staff.
