The Kansas Office of Disability Determination Services is eager to talk with you about the currently open position of Disability Examiner. Nationwide, there are less than 7,000 Disability Examiners. Because millions of Americans depend on the Social Security program, individuals with skills and training in this area enjoy employment opportunities nationwide. Disability Examiners use medical, technical and legal knowledge to independently analyze and interpret complex medical information, legal issues, Social Security Law, rule and regulations to make legally and medically sound objective decisions about disability claims. Disability Examiners walk alongside claimants to help them determine eligibility and available benefits. Because of their skills and the training offered to them, Disability Examiners are able to clarify guidelines and possibilities for those challenged with finding applicable resources.

The Kansas Department of Children and Families (DCF), Disability Determination Services (DDS); is hiring several Entry-Level Disability Examiner Trainee positions. DDS is located at 2820 SW Fairlawn Rd, Topeka, KS. Free onsite parking is available! Currently, open trainee positions start at $39,852.80 with potential for rapid growth. Focused initiative by recruits can find them on a career ladder resulting in an increase in salary after two years with additional future opportunities available at the quality assurance and supervisory levels. An Entry-Level Disability Examiner Trainee will learn and apply the medical, legal and vocational factors involved in case documentation, assessment of impairment severity, and determination of eligibility for disability benefits under Social Security law. Training will be in a classroom setting for thirteen weeks with gradual transition to on-the-job training and increasing independence over the next year.

Duties include:

  • Interviews clients and/or collateral contacts to gather information; secure medical and work history information; determine need and eligibility for Social Security Administration disability Program.
  • Documents eligibility decisions and retains copies of client information, psychological, medical, and vocational in order to provide accountability for the expenditure of federal funds by recording information in electronic claimant files.
  • Reviews initial applications and determines the type and amount of documentary evidence necessary to arrive at a disability decision in accordance with federal regulations and standards for disability programs.
  • Requests authorization to purchase necessary exams and testing in the field of medicine, psychiatry, and psychology evaluation, as needed, in order to obtain evidence that will assist in making a determination.
  • Assists in making a determination of disability by analyzing and evaluating all documentary evidence to determine if claimant meets the federal and state requirements. Prepares a detailed written decision for file documentation and notifies the claimant of the decision in writing.
  • Successful completion of Disability Examiner Basic Training and final exam.
  • Staffing with internal medical, psychological and speech consultants.
  • Identifies past work as per the Dictionary of Occupational Titles and obtain complete work histories.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience interviewing, investigating, compiling information, documenting decisions, interpreting guidelines and/or providing technical assistance relevant to the agency's programs. Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Security Clearance: A background check (KBI - criminal background, welfare fraud, driver's license and Child/Adult Abuse and Neglect Central Registry) is required for all positions with the Department for Children and Families (DCF) as a condition of employment, which may include fingerprinting and FBI check. Security clearance must be obtained prior to employment with DCF.
