1. Provide accurate diagnostic information that is used by physicians to render a formal final medical diagnosis
a. Set up and prep patient for the procedure.
b. Explain procedure but not discussing clinical findings.
c. Position patient for procedure to their comfort adapting when necessary.
d. Acquire all previous echo findings to include any and all outside studies for comparison.
e. Works jointly with Centralized Scheduling to accommodate fit-ins, physician satisfaction, pediatric clinic schedule.
f. Confer with ordering physician for unusual problems that arise while patient is in the echo lab.
g. Dysrhythmic Management-Prevents, recognizes and facilitates treatment of abnormal cardiac rhythms.
h. Can organize/prioritize workload in high volume area.
2. Demonstrates a uniform high level of competency in numerous areas of expertise within echocardiography
a. Is knowledgeable in cardiac function, anatomy, physiology, hemodnynamics.
b. Documents 2/D, m-mode, pulse wave, continuous wave, color flow Doppler, and harmonics as they relate to daily tasks.
c. Provides digital acquisition and storage of echocardiograms.
d. Assist with TEE, pericardialcentesis.
e. Can distinguish artifact/technical factors from pathology for appropriate diagnosis.
f. Perform pediatric echocardiograms.
g. Review and update existing policies/procedures.
3. Acquires and maintains knowledge and competency in Echocardiography as set forth by the ARDMS.
a. Strives for excellence and continued competence through continuing education.
b. Ensure that the Echo lab maintains its accreditation within ICAEL through specific requirements.
c. Document all educational programs/seminars as to keep up the pace with the ever-changing profession.

a. Is adaptive to a full range of body motion, including the handling and lifting of pts., manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
b. Responsible for solving daily operational problems related to performing echoes, including trouble-shooting equipment malfunctions.
c. Exhibits flexibility and independent judgement due to the unpredictable nature of echocardiographic procedures, technical quality and
unexpected cardiac findings.
d. Must be prepared to recognize any condition, whether observed in the echo lab or in patient behavior, that may pose an immediate
threat to health of life and must react appropriately.

7. Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports psychosocial and facilitates lifestyle changes.
a. Active Listening-Attends closely to and attaches significance to a patient's verbal and nonverbal message.
b. Emotional Support-Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement during times of stress.
8. Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports protection from harm.
a. Code management: Coordinates emergency measures to sustain life
b. Fall Prevention-Institutes special precautions with patient at risk for injury from falling.
c. Infection Control-Minimizes the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents.
d. Surveillance: Safety-Collects and analyzes information about the patient and the environment for use in promoting and maintaining
patient safety.
e. Vital Signs Monitoring-Collects and analyzes cardiovascular, respiratory and body temperature data to determine and prevent
complications.
9. Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports the family unit
a. Family Involvement-Facilitates family participation in the emotional and physical care of the patient.
Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
1-2 years (full-time) performing echocardiographic diagnostic procedures
Experience Preferred/Desired
2 or more years (full time) performing general and special echocardiographic procedures
Education Minimum Required
12 months of full time echocardiographic education
Graduate of 12 month full time training in an accredited cardiac sonography program.
Education Preferred/Desired
Graduate of 12 month full time training program with additional specialty training
Training Minimum Required
Ability to perform echocardiographic examinations in compliance with protocols and standards identified in "Essentials and Standards"
per ICAEL
Maintains ICAEL minimal procedure volume requirements -300 resting transthoracic
Training Preferred/Desired
Exceeds ICAEL procedural volume requirements of greater than 300 transthoracic
Special Skills Minimum Required
Able to recognize abnormalities, understand all techniques and their diagnostic value for the evaluation of cardiac anatomy, function,
and hemodynamics, Pediatric transthoracic
Knowledge and ability to perform special echocardiographic procedures.
Special Skills Preferred/Desired
Certification in multiple modalities.
American Registry Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Radiologist Technologist
Licensure and/or Certifications Required
RDCS
BLS (AHA or ARC)
Licensure and/or Certifications Preferred/Desired
Certification in 2 modalities, PALS
