What You'll Be Doing

Are you highly skilled in building automation systems and looking for an exciting career in one of the fastest growing counties in the Nation? If so, the Physical Plant division of Wake County General Services Administration (GSA) wants to meet you! The Facilities System Engineer position performs professional work in support of maintaining, repairing and replacing county assets to ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency. The intent of this position is to support the Senior Energy Engineer in the mission of achieving greater energy efficiency across the County’s Facility portfolio. The position is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the building automation systems and providing technical expertise and engineering related to building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

Monitor building automation systems and identify and implement measures that will improve energy efficiency, indoor air quality and occupant comfort

Modify sequence of operations for control systems (while in operation or after hours) to reduce energy consumption and increase building comfort

Interpret and diagnose system abnormalities with the goal of reducing overall facility energy consumption

Establish and maintain sensor calibration and maintenance program to ensure that all sensors monitoring energy consumption or production are calibrated and operating correctly

Maintain records and inventory of building automation components

Analyze a range of data inputs including building automation, utility and facility management sources to identify meaningful trends

Run and create reports created from building automation trends and utility data to assist in troubleshooting and the justification of energy conservation projects

Review building automation portion of design drawings and completed work on construction projects to ensure county standards are being maintained in new projects

Work collaboratively with Project Managers to establish the scope, budget, design, schedule, and implementation of projects

Work with contractors to complete projects or tasks as needed

Collaborate with other Trades groups to help maintain critical systems for 24/7 operations and run controlled system service-level repairs and projects

Respond as needed to support the actions of the Emergency Operations Center during declared emergencies as well as respond to adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, hurricane, tornado, flood, etc.

Direct the implementation and completion of special projects as assigned

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Technology and Facility Management or related field
Three years of job related experience
A valid driver's license and "safe" driving record
Equivalent education and experience are accepted
Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
Certification in a controls programming language
Five years of experience in engineering or buildingcontrols
How Will We Know You're 'The One'?
Firm grasp of mechanical, electrical and plumbing system operation
General construction knowledge
Strong knowledge base and experience with building automation system installation, programming and maintenance
Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems including Air Handling Units (AHU), Variable Air Volume Boxes (VAVs), pumps, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), boilers, chillers, lighting controllers, low-voltage control circuits, sensors, and automation controllers
Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to take data from multiple sources to identify the point of failure
Ability to establish, configure, test, and maintain operating systems, application software and building automation tools
Ability to communicate and create effective documentation identifying problems and recommended resolutions from existing data sets
Knowledge of workplace safety practices and PPE to conform with OSHA requirements
