Job Title: Field Inspector

Salary Range: $18.00/hour for first inspection season

Length of position: Temporary, Seasonal. Peak field work season is mid June through July.

Role and Responsibilities

Washington State Crop Improvement is based in Pullman, Washington, and employs a team of remote field inspectors during the summer growing season. These inspectors are responsible for seed field inspections in their home areas and travel to the Pullman office is not regularly required. Please note that the “home area” is often large, and will require travel most days.

Field inspectors conduct inspections of fields producing certified seed of small grains, chickpeas and other crops certified by WSCIA and complete a detailed pass/fail report of their adherence to certification standards. Field inspection responsibilities include:

· Walking fields to conduct inspections, often in the heat of the day and over steep and/or uneven terrain.

· Availability to work sometimes full time throughout the summer, mainly during July.

· Communicating with seed growers and contractors to schedule field inspections and report results.

· Applying field standards from relevant sections of WAC 16-302.

· Working as part of an independent team to conduct field inspections.

Requirements

Ability to communicate and work as part of a team, or as an individual.

Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers.

Possess a valid driver’s license, and if under the age of 21 have a reliable vehicle and current insurance.

Able to operate a computer and basic internet and email software.

Able to read a map and describe surroundings using cardinal directions.

Must walk fields to conduct inspections in a variety of environments.

Eye for detail, with ability to discern between differences in plant phenotype.

Preferred Skills

Agronomy background with ability to identify weed and crop species.

Familiarity with home area.
