Job Summary and Qualifications
The Financial Counselor shall be a designated member of the Pre Registration, Registration or Authorization team who must understand detailed medical terminology, related insurance rules and regulations and the demographics of the community. Responsibilities will also include coordinating financial aspects of care in conjunction with the PAS Department-Patient Financial Counselor. The financial counselor will work with patients and their families beginning with the evaluation for treatment and continuing through and after treatment, in a compassionate and tactful manner in order to help facilitate access to and provide continuity of care. They will help the patient understand the billing process and will help the patient resource options for financial aid from outside sources. The financial counselor will use knowledge of insurance companies to coordinate coverage for patient. S/he advises providers, patients and caregivers about available benefits and financial obligations related to covered and non-covered treatment costs. The financial counselor will also work in collaboration with other members of the Clinics, insurers, and administrative personnel. The Financial Counselor serves as the Pre Registration, Registration or Authorization Lead who provides assistance to Customer Service Coordinators and the Practice Manager in researching and resolving complex patient related issues. The Financial Counselor reviews accounts for accuracy including proper pre-registration, registration and obtaining authorization accordingly.
- Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing with a customer focused orientation.
- Inventory Management
- Review and monitor reports to provide oversight of patient care and ensure timely initiation and accurate completion of pre-registration, registration or authorization.
- Work directly with Practice Manager and clinic staff as well as communicate unresolved escalated issues timely to avoid any delay in patient care.
- Meet all departmental goals and time frames as designated by department leaders to ensure timely patient care
- Oversee the daily activities of the clinic pre-registration, registration and authorization processes ensuring standards are met/exceeded including proper documentation and record keeping
- Review and audit cases for missed opportunities and process improvement including completion
- Assist Practice Manager with training and coaching of employees in achieving desired outcome of established performance standards.
- Assist Practice Manager with identifying performance and productivity areas of opportunities
- Perform clerical/administrative duties as designated by the Practice Manager
- PC skills - knowledge of Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, financial reports.
- Completes initial financial screening on all new/referred patients including but not limited to:
- Confirms employment unemployment status
- Reviews and documents policy benefits if insured
- Reviews and documents drug coverage if insured
- Confirms coordination of benefits for medical and drug coverage with insurer
- Confirms co-pays/ co-insurance, covered and non-covered expenses
- Accurately identifies managed care plans, provider network eligibility status and access utilization requirements.
- Educate patients and caregiver(s) about their financial responsibility; providing out-of-pocket cost estimates.
- Screen for assistance program eligibility up front.
- Communicates to physicians, care team and administration of any potential reimbursement issues prior to treatment being provided, works collaboratively with provider, insurer and administration to resolve.
- Review and work denial, appeals as necessary; submits coding and clinical documentation for medical necessity.
- Attends and participates in bi-weekly conference
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What qualifications you will need:
- Licensure/Certification/Registration:
- Education: Associates degree in HIM preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in a physician front office /hospital patient access setting. Minimum of 1 year experience with insurance procedures/terminology and patient interactions. Minimum of 1 year experience obtaining authorizations/predeterminations.
- Special qualifications: Experience in ICD-10 and CPT coding.
- Basic skills - demonstrates ability to organize, perform and track multiple tasks accurately in short timeframes, have ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple demands, ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team player, adaptability, analytical and problem solving ability and attention to detail and able to perform basic mathematical calculations, balance and reconcile figures, punctuate properly, spell correctly and transcribe accurately.
- Leadership - guides individuals and groups toward desired outcome by providing training, advice and feedback to assist/support employees in achieving established performance standards
- Policies & Procedures - demonstrates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems
- Strategic execution - assist in monitoring operational processes and making recommendations for changes/adjustments as needed during the implementation or change to new products or processes
- Work schedule: Authorizations - Full-time - Monday–Friday(8:00 am-4:30 pm)
