Job Summary:

Assists in managing all daily aspects of life and environmental safety. Ensures safety of hospital staff, patients and visitors through educating staff on fire safety practices and physically inspecting hospital building, grounds and fire protection devices in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements. Responsible for all signage with the facility, including new installations and ADA compliance. Reports to Unit Leader.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducts physical inspections of the organization's buildings and grounds following established procedure and maintains an inventory of safety supplies to ensure that all fire protection devices are operable and fire hazards or potential fire hazards are identified and corrected.
  • Conducts in-services and fire drills for hospital staff (employees, volunteers, students, medical staff) following established schedule and outline to ensure that staff is educated in fire safety policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates fire safety procedures (burning permits, sprinkler and fire alarm shutdowns) and readiness of fire and safety vehicles according department procedures to ensure that fire safety is maintained and avoid false alarms.
  • Responds to and investigates fire and safety incidents, recommending corrective action and ensuring its implementation to meet the needs of the hospital as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Manages safety hazards, by evaluating the hazard, recommending corrective action and ensuring its implementation.
  • Evaluates, creates and installs new signs throughout the facility according to regulatory standards.
  • Works effectively as a team member within department and with customers to provide quality service to hospital units through communication, cooperation and collaboration.
  • Responds to 2 to 6 incidents per day.
  • In-services 91% of employee population.

Qualifications

  • Requires High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Requires 5 years experience as a Fire Fighter.
  • Connecticut certified as FF-1, Haz-mat operational required.
  • CT State Fire Code Inspector Certification Preferred.
  • N.F.P.A. training in the Life Safety Code, Sprinkler Systems, Portable Fire Extinguishers, preferred.
  • Simplex Certified as a "Fire Alarm Inspector" preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and follow instructions
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office and excel.
  • EMT/EMR and CPR Certified
