General Job Description
*The Health Information Management Technician performs for day-to-day tasks of the Health Information Management department, creating optimal customer service within the department. Under the supervision of the HIM Coordinator, performs a variety of correspondence, document management and archives, QA/QC and data abstraction activities. Tasks include scanning, uploading, labeling, participating in paper medical record inventory, retrieval, purging, shredding activities and provider review and approval of patients’ personal health information (PHI).
Job Roles
*Assists in paper medical record inventory, purging, and shredding activities at both archive and off-site storage areas.
*Coordinates the release of medical information, following all department and regulatory guidelines. Verifies authorizations, records incoming requests, processes requests, and communicates with requestor.
*Ensures applicable regulatory and department standards are met or exceeded and adhered to on an on-going basis (JCAHO, OSHA, Safety Standards, etc.)
*Files and retrieves medical records. Attaches loose reports to correct charts, verifying data. Maintains logs and billing systems for PHI charges.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
*Processes documents received, including preparation for scanning, scanning, and reviewing scanned records. Ensures records requiring Provider review and approval are scanned, uploaded, and messaged to providers within 48 hours.
*Provides customer service for department, including answering phone calls, greeting visitors, taking messages, and routing faxes.
*Reviews medical records for accuracy and completeness. Participates in a variety of Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and data abstraction as assigned.
Education/Certifications/Licenses/Registrations
*At least 2 years of experience in a Medical Record or HIM environment required.
*Experience with record/chart analysis and immunization extraction is strongly preferred.
*High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required.
*HIT certification strongly preferred.
*Or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the skills, knowledge and ability to perform the essential job duties, and which meets any required state or federal certification requirements.
Experience/Specialized skills (including Language)
*Basic computer literacy (i.e., use system to manage and schedule appointments, access electronic medical record information).
*Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.
*Intermediate interpersonal and customer service skills.
*Intermediate written and verbal communication skills.
*Knowledge of medical terminology and E-HR structure.

If you are hired at Family Health Centers of San Diego, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, jurisdictional requirements, skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to these factors – we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is what we reasonably expect to pay for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
