Horticulturist / Landscape Gardener

Job Summary

This is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Gardens. Responsible for performing activities related to the care and maintenance of the gardens, landscape and grounds.

Essential Functions

• Perform all needed horticultural activities, including planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, weeding, mulching, and pesticide applications, pest control, garden cleanup, custodial tasks and any others activities directed by supervisors.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools (chain saw, blower, lawnmower, and string trimmer), electric carts, tractors and other equipment.
• Assist with the maintenance and installation of irrigation systems.
• Assist with the care and maintenance of plants in the Garden nursery.
• Assist in the setup and take down of tables, chairs, and other equipment for classes, workshops, meetings and events, as needed.
• Assist with other SDBG activities and tasks as needed.

Competencies

• Have a general knowledge of plants and their culture.
• Work well with other staff and volunteers as a team player.
• Customer service oriented, interact with visitors in a courteous and helpful manner.

Preferred

• College-level course work in horticulture and allied fields is preferred
• Experience in grounds and garden maintenance, nursery work, or landscaping

Work Scheduling

• Must be available to work some holiday, weekend and evening shifts.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather including rainy days.

Physical Requirements

• Able to work a full shift outdoors with strenuous activity
• Able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs. a distance of 25 feet frequently

Other Duties

• Perform other duties or special projects as assigned

Additional requirements

• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Successfully pass a background check

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
