Successful candidates will have a professional career singing opera at the highest levels, including with evidence of engagement at major American and international companies, festivals, and venues (including but not limited to, for example, the Metropolitan Opera, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, Opera Colorado, Chautauqua, the Royal Opera of Versailles, the Dutch National Opera, Aix-en-Provence, and others), recordings with major labels (such as, for example, Decca, Naxos, Harmonia Mundi, Albany, and others), and evidence of major recognition for career achievement (such as Grammy Awards or Richard Tucker Music Foundation awards and grants). Successful candidates will be graduates of major Young Artist programs (such as the Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, or others).
Additional experience as an artistic director and administrator in a higher education environment is required, as is prior experience teaching in a college or university environment (either as a faculty member, as a guest teacher with a significant record of invited masterclasses, or, preferably, both).
Candidates for such positions at the University of Houston will normally hold the terminal degree in the field; professional experience in lieu of the terminal degree will be considered.
