This position will work closely with the Installation Lead, Project Lead. An ideal candidate would be a highly organized generalist with experience in the landscape/building trades (stone, wood, metal, etc.) who can work independently and collaboratively to meet quality standards and project timelines. We keep flexible schedules, so we are looking for an responsible, independent person who also values collaborative work and good communication.

This is a physically demanding job and we work year round, no matter the weather. Regularly being able to lift 70+ lbs and excellent stamina are expected.

Responsibilities:

  • Landscape Installation: (60%-70%) Keeping a positive attitude while doing all manner of skilled and unskilled labor (demolition, digging, hauling and setting stone, grading paths, carpentry projects, rain garden install, planting trees/shrubs/etc.)
  • Communication with staff: (~5-10%) Stay in close communication on project progress to keep our schedule full and to track project budgets/expenses.
  • Project Planning/Operations: (10%-30%) As this position evolves, more of your time will be spent planning and leading Rainwise installations as well as other projects.
  • Truck/Tool Organization: (~5%) Sharing in the responsibility of keeping an orderly job site, making sure trucks are left ready for the next day, cleaning and maintaining our tools and HQ. This includes proactively communicating what tools need replacing, what new tools need to be purchased, blades need sharpening, issues with trucks, etc.
  • On-site Crew Leadership: We are looking for someone who has basic construction experience that can be applied to the garden installation elements above. We encourage everyone to be a leader by sharing whatever skills and knowledge they bring to the team. Once employees have demonstrated their skills and sense of responsibility, they may be asked to lead a project or work independently on a part of a project.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Cisterns & Rainwise: Training in Rainwise projects or willingness to learn what it takes to be responsible for the implementation of Rainwise projects is a must. Basic plumbing, math, geometry, inventory/planning. Ability to deal with city rainwise processes.
  • Excellent driving record: Experience driving trucks in town, parking in busy urban areas, backing up with heavy loads, occasionally pulling trailers, loading tools securely, etc.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to repeatedly lift 50-75+lbs, move heavy wheelbarrows, climb ladders, carry and secure tools. We work outside no matter the weather.
  • Flexibility: We are a growing company in an industry where no two days are the same, so being able to adapt on the fly is crucial.
  • Ownership and Responsibility: Our accountability is to ourselves, our co-workers and the company as a whole. We build trust by doing what we say we’re going to do to the best of our ability and being communicative when we fall short. We expect a high level of personal responsibility of all of us.
  • Carpentry/Masonry/Construction Experience. Basic construction skills, knowledge of best practices for sustainable building. Dry-stack retaining walls, pathways, gates, small decks is the scope we currently work in.
  • Horticulture Experience: Interest and some knowledge of PNW plant material and care and the fundamentals of Permaculture
  • Time Management: We work within a budget so you will be required to manage time accordingly.
  • Clear communication: Participate actively in creating a supportive work environment. We expect clear client notes, requests for materials, general project needs as well as clearly communicating with coworkers.

Salary depends upon experience. SSG offers paid time off, health insurance, continuing education allowance, discount on plant materials, and competitive wages. Starting wage between $25-30 hr plus benefits: Healthcare, employee discount, PTO, Education training budget and more.
