Purpose of Position

Why does the job exist?

This position will perform all law enforcement activities in the Forestry Division's Law Enforcement Program and enforce Chapter 6B Natural Resources Laws and Regulations. This position will conduct field activities: investigations, patrols, arrests, issue citations and/or criminal complaints, report writing and providing testimony in court. This position will assist the Law Enforcement Program Manager with statewide implementation. This will include managing program objectives to include budgeting and training in coordination with field unit supervisors and Forestry Division leadership.

How does it get done?

Enforce the Forest Conservation Act, rules and regulation and related state statues. Conduct investigations and field patrols. Collect evidence, complete reports, make arrests, file charges and provide testimony in court. Write clear, concise and accurate reports and prepare legal documents for court prosecutions and criminal complaints and work towards recovery of fire suppression costs. Successfully complete Forest Conservation Law on the job field training, firearms certification, fire investigation certification training and attain a Forestry División Commission from the State Forester to accomplish job duties. Assist District Foresters by providing FEPP vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection and inventory. Assist District Foresters with defensive driving and wild land cause and determination training for staff and local fire department personnel. Assist District Foresters and staff with general district programs and projects where needed. This includes acquiring and maintaining basic forest management skills and basic wildland fire management and suppression skills. Assists District Fire Management Officers with driver's license checks for employment of Emergency Firefighters. Work with outside law enforcement agencies to enforce the Forest Conservation Act. Utilize Join Powers agreements, contracts, field operations, joint trainings and patrols to link similar goals and objectives of the Forestry

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science and/or Ecology and one (1) year of experience in Forestry, Range Management, Forest Management, Natural Resources, Wildlife Science, Fire Science or Ecology. Five (5) years of active duty service in the Armed Forces will substitute for the required education and experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Express ideas both orally and in writing, Demonstrate an understanding of fire suppression techniques and Incident Command System.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Extensive travel & work in rough terrain. Work irregular or extended hours including evening, weekends, & holidays. May be exposed to a variety or weather conditions, including conditions associated with forest & wildfire management activities. Weekend/holiday Work.
