Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to support, challenge and drive the strategic and commercial decisions that will help to develop and build new transmission projects that will help facilitate a renewable and clean energy future. We are looking for candidates that have expertise in HVDC and transmission planning that will help drive our commercial business development activities.
The successful candidate will have a visionary and entrepreneurial mindset. They will utilize their engineering expertise to successful scope new transmission projects and engage with stakeholders to deliver new business opportunities and partnerships. Moreover, they should have an understanding of the ISO New England wholesale markets and transmission planning landscape. The candidate will also have a willingness to be involved in all aspects of project development activities including permitting, developing cost recovery and tariff design, FERC regulation, and external stakeholder alignment.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide commercial leadership and direction for Clean Energy Development.
- Partner with the Clean Energy Business Development Directors, senior leadership and external executives to pursue emerging infrastructure opportunities and partnerships that are in line with National Grid’s strategic business objectives and value requirements.
- Lead all proactive modelling and analytic efforts for clean energy development opportunities, future technology, asset development strategy and other market opportunities.
- Propose new operating models for the business, if necessary, to suit the opportunity adding detail as the discrete opportunity progresses.
- Lead proposal development, technical writing, pipeline management and stakeholder mapping.
- Develop and negotiate the principles of commercial agreements underpinning pursuit of new business.
- Develop investment papers and business cases to support the progress of new opportunities through company governance.
- Provide leadership and oversight to a team of professional analysts responsible for all business analytics, commercial agreements and support, and proposal development for all new clean energy business opportunities.
- Develop and manage a highly motivated, capable and adequately resourced team, driving a performance management culture and development planning that delivers value through employee engagement.
- Assemble and lead virtual teams from across National Grid in pursuit of opportunities, engaging resources and expertise from the wider business or externally as needed to develop robust and compelling business cases.
- Manage internal and external stakeholders and assure buy-in to propositions.
- Monitor performance of commercial activities using key metrics and prepare reports for senior management.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience conducting new business development and engineering for HVDC and/or transmission planning.
- Good understanding of technical, commercial, regulatory, market and relationship management aspects of business development involving affecting the utility industry and/or transmission landscape.
- Ability to generate and win new business ideas or commercial opportunities; develop the opportunities to a defined proposition and lead opportunities through to a mature stage of project.
- Strong project management skills as well as strong writing and presentation development skills.
- Superb ability to negotiate, problem solve and influence key stakeholders resulting in desired outcomes and delivering strong deals for National Grid.
- Exceptional inter-personal, relationship building and collaboration skills at all levels.
