JOB SUMMARY:

  • This position exists to oversee laboratory testing on patient specimens performed in a specific area (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank or Microbiology).
  • Maintains records of performance and utilizes independent judgment to oversee acceptable test results within quality control standards.
  • May act as a key resource person for team members inside and outside of the department.
  • Instructs team members on laboratory procedures and techniques to ensure accurate lab results.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs the flow so all applicable regulations are met.
  • This position assumes responsibility for quality control procedures, instrument function checks, inventory, quality assurance, and any maintenance procedures in assigned areas.
  • Responsible for team member training and competency.
  • Performs all tasks according to standard operating procedures.
  • May work on the development and modification of procedures and assumes additional responsibilities as outlined by management or the laboratory director.
  • The person that fills this position will remain competent to work in the specified department as well as in other areas of the laboratory.

QUALIFICATIONS:

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Evaluate and troubleshoot quality control variances.
  • Supply management.
  • Review completed results in computer.
  • Update procedures and evidence binders to meet regulatory standards.
  • Meet criteria of Lab Tech II.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be able to accurately produce test results and evaluate variances.
  • This position requires the ability to accurately sort and distribute all types of body fluids, tissues, and other specimens brought to the lab for analysis.
  • This position requires variable work hours and weekend/holiday rotation.
  • Must be capable of consistent, independent judgement under fluctuating workload pressure.
  • Must be able to communicate technical information clearly, both in directly and by phone.
  • Requires the ability to move rapidly from location to location within the hospital.
  • Interact with physicians, nursing units, and co-workers concerning questions or problems identified on the shift.
  • Act as a liaison between co-workers on the shift and the supervisor to assure staff concerns are addressed and that the hospital/lab interests are fairly represented.
  • Model compliance with lab and hospital safety rules with regards to wearing gloves, lab coats and/or PPE.
  • Notifies the supervisor of any performance trends identified, of any unresolved problems on the shift, between shifts, or with other departments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
