Position Information


The San Antonio District Maintenance Office is looking for a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I or II who wants to combine their experience and leadership skills with their knowledge and expertise of transportation maintenance to improve the condition of our roadways. This position reports to the Director of Maintenance and is actively involved in the management of the San Antonio District Special Jobs section, who use specialized equipment to assist maintenance sections across the 12-county district. You will be working with both internal employees and external entities on TxDOT's behalf in order to facilitate an excellent relationship with your fellow TxDOT employees and the traveling public.

Starting Yearly Salary:

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I (A17): $36,976.00 - $50,072.00

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I (A18): $39,521.00 - $54,584.00

This position is for (1) Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Position Description


Performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the District Special Jobs Section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en-route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker.
  • Troubleshoots problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I:

Experience: 5 years roadway maintenance related work.

Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief II:

Experience: 6 years roadway maintenance related work.

All Levels:

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of hire.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication

  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
