The Social Services Ministry Assistant will interview, assess, collect client data and formulate a plan of action appropriate for clients coming into The Salvation Army. Must be able to work with clients who are involved with other social service systems, mental health and adults in crisis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Partners with the Corps Officers in developing programs designed to meet the needs identified in the community, including but not limited to senior programming, adult and child literacy as well as other support/education needs. Will organize networking amongst community social service agencies and encourage clients to participate in the holistic program of The Salvation Army.
- Conduct research into community organizations and business for possible Social Services partnerships, volunteers and potential funding sources.
- Report on activities to Corps Officers on a regular basis.
- Network within the community and conduct presentations about The Salvation Army Social Services to the public at service clubs, religious groups, etc.
- Coordinate and implement seasonal projects: Dollar Energy, Bundle-Up, Thanksgiving assistance, Christmas assistance, Camp Allegheny, Adopt-a-Family, etc. Processing of forms, i.e, recording and maintaining client files according to Salvation Army standards.
- Interview clients and assist in empowering clients to resolve the crisis with which they are confronted. This may include but should not be considered limited to meeting the immediate need; other actions such as family budgeting, job searching & preparation, participation in other Salvation Army programs, referral to other organizations, etc.
- Attend Social Services Department Meetings, Employee Meetings and service provider agency meetings as requested.
- Complete and maintain client files in accordance with the Salvation Army policies.
- Strictly adhere to policies pertaining to confidentiality, release of information, and retention and/or destruction of records. For example, if client files are subpoenaed, the files are not to be released without instruction of the Corps Officer or Director of Social Services.
- Delegate tasks to volunteers or employees assigned to Social Services when appropriate.
For example:
Processing forms and maintaining client files.
_Working alongside Officers to place orders and pick up food from the
Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, Sam’s Club, and for feeding programs.
Current programs include but are not limited to: emergency food pantry
with fresh produce, SFSP (Kid’s Summer Café/Feeding Program), CSFP
(Senior Food Boxes)._
Preparing all paperwork in relation to food orders and faxing reports monthly. Stocking, clearing out food, and keeping a tidy Food Pantry.
Packing and distributing food bags.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent counseling and listening skills.
- Ability to work on multiple projects and prioritize accordingly during different seasons.
- Able to interact and communicate effectively with team members, clients and agencies.
- Knowledge of Microsoft computer applications.
- Flexibility and good organizational skills.
- Must have ability to adapt to various work locations and settings.
- Work with limited supervision.
- Must be familiar with social work ethics.
- Must have good time management skills.
- Valid Driver's License, approved to drive a 12-passenger van
- Respect of cultural differences, levels of education, physical functioning and crisis situation in a non-judgmental manner.
- All three PA Clearances required upon employment and thereafter upon renewal date: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Request for Criminal Record, and Fingerprint based federal criminal history.
- PA Mandated and Permissive Reporting and The Salvation Army’s KeepSAfe training required.
