DNR Forest Practices in NW Region is seeking a forester to join a team that provides assistance to the Forest Practices district. You will be the assistant forester responsible for reviewing and making concurrence decisions on Water Type Modifications in the region and reviewing class II FPAs. You will also be part of a team of field foresters who use forestry skills to help make decisions on Forest Practices Applications.
Are you interested in a career that allows you to serve local communities by leading/mentoring other natural resource professionals in support of the “Forest Practices” program? This program implements the “Forest Practices Act,” and “Timber/fish/Wildlife” agreement. The goals of both the act and agreement are to protect natural resources such as water quality and fish and wildlife habitat while simultaneously maintaining a viable forest products industry. These duties involve enforcing forest practices rules in collaboration with other state agencies and Indian Tribes. The duty station for this position is located in Sedro-Woolley, WA, in the scenic Skagit Valley. World-class outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the area. The main entrance to North Cascades National Park is only 1 hr drive to the east. The San Juan Islands can be accessed from Anacortes, just a 45 minute drive to the west. Additional recreation opportunities can be found in the surrounding Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest and state forest trust lands. For more urban experiences, Seattle, WA. And Vancouver, B.C. are each only an hour and a half drive away.
Duties
Responsibilities:
Knowledge of agency policies, practices and procedures- Skills in oral and written communication
- Key Knowledge and Skills, Forestry
- Knowledge of Forest Practices Act and Rules.
- General Forestry, Fish and Wildlife knowledge. Knowledge of local timber harvest and forest road construction practices.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree in forestry or similar natural resources degree.
OR one or more years of professional natural resource management experience. - Demonstrated ability to:
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Provide outstanding customer service
- Work effectively as part of a team
- Use computer skills involving managing office data and corresponding to multiple customers including staff, landowners, agencies, and Tribes.

- Incumbent must be able to traverse steep, uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Large majority (70%) of fieldwork is performed in isolated, unimproved natural areas.
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel. Requires large majority (60%) of time in the field traveling alone between forest practice sites.
- A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

- A bachelor’s degree in forestry or related natural resources field and two years of professional experience in a related natural resource specialty area.
- Working knowledge of Washington State forest practices rules and forest management and road construction practices.
