About the Role
The Project Manager Oil & Gas Logistics is responsible for the management of projects, coordination, and day-to-day movement of Matson Oil & Gas customers’ cargo loads to and from Alaska, and the lower 48. The Project Manager Oil & Gas Logistics will facilitate relationships with trucking contract carriers and delivery agents in outlying terminals. They will work closely with the Logistics Manager and carriers to quote, identify, plan, and coordinate projects and shipments on behalf of Matson customers and prospective customers, by utilizing the most safe, efficient, and cost-effective means of transport.
What you’ll do:
- Manage the energy market logistics projects from initiation, planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling to closing of the project.
- Works to provide operational support by implementing problem solving solutions for loading materials to our equipment and movement on our vessels or highway systems.
- Determine methods of shipments including identifying available motor carrier (OTR) vendor options, determining equipment requirements, doing a cost analysis of the options, and negotiating truck costs.
- Focus on maximizing margins, dispatching loads to the selected carrier, and closely monitoring the pickup, transit, and delivery of each load.
- Develop a knowledge and understanding of truck capacity and rates in their responsible region.
- Negotiate truck rates effectively by understanding truck capacity, equipment capacity, material handling, and market rates, while maximizing Matson Navigation margins.
- Work with Oil & Gas Sales and management teams to complete service agreements, RFP’s, and vendor profiles.
- Identify any delays associated with shipments as they arise and implement contingency plans and/or implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Work to resolve exceptions regarding equipment requirements that may affect delivery schedules.
- Communicate with customers and project stakeholders by providing regular status reports of shipments.
- Inform customers of freight delays and loads sustaining overages, shortages, and damage.
- Correspond with manager, coworkers, and other departments to ensure execution of project expectations.
- Resolve situations involving distressed loads or other trip complications.
- Correspond with coworkers to ensure execution of load deliveries, as well as proper invoicing, payment, and discrepancy resolution with carriers for project needs.
- Provide customer support for special commodity related issues as needed.
- Awareness of State and Federal (DOT, OSHA, etc.) compliance.
- Coordinate with the railroad, forwarders, and service providers in Alaska and the Lower 48 for material moves.
- Manage subcontractors and/or labor needed for projects locally, or remotely.
- Liaison with Matson and other ocean, logistics, or LTL carriers for movement of freight.
- Review and understand the Collective Bargaining Agreements.
- Travel to various locations in Alaska and the Lower 48 to manage projects or moves if required.
- Comply with all company rules, policies, and procedures. Work and behave safely by following all safety rules and regulations.
You have these skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and ability to learn new software.
- Make quick, smart decisions under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal, and demonstrated verbal and written, communication skills - including excellent telephone skills.
- Ability to work with others across the organization and outside of the organization to achieve a shared objective.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing customer requests and requirements.
- Ability to prioritize and coordinate people, equipment, and customer requirements.
- Ability to meet financial obligations and is persistent in meeting objectives despite obstacles.
- Ability to establish formal and informal relationships across a variety of functions and locations.
And these qualifications:
- Knowledge of North Slope of Alaska business and logistics.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in transportation logistics, that includes cold weather transportation, and projects in the energy market segment.
- Bachelor’s degree, PMP certification, or equivalent work experience in transportation/logistics.
- Knowledge of material handling, equipment loading, and securing.
- Knowledge of dispatch procedures.
- Knowledge of Federal and State DOT regulations and DOC regulations.
- Understanding of supply chain management.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.

- Previous experience working with a union workforce.
