Primary Purpose:
The position is based is the Chicago Integrated Railroad Operations Center (CIROC) and is responsible to monitor the overall operating condition of the Chicago gateway, working closely with NS and foreign railroad personnel to facilitate smooth and efficient freight and passenger rail operations through the city. The position oversees interactions among all gateway carriers, working to identify opportunities to improve network fluidity and triaging trigger events for escalation inside and outside NS. The position leads gateway conference calls and reports on key metrics managed in the Railinc ClearPath system for publication across the industry. The position also assists the Director-CTCO with integration of service design changes impacting the Chicago gateway, and serves as an industry representative during VIP visits by Federal, State, and Local elected officials related to the CREATE Public-Private Partnership.

Principal Duties:
  • Serve as NS representative in CIROC, monitoring gateway health and coordinating response to episodic events impacting multiple carriers
  • Manage the OpCon escalation process, guiding conference calls aimed at protecting gateway fluidity and overall network health
  • Forecast possible issues and opportunities based on inbound traffic, trains held, congestion, and resource availability, and take steps to help resolve issues proactively
  • Work closely with the NS Chicago Command Center and foreign command centers to facilitate effective interchange operations
  • Visit foreign railyards and facilities to review interchange operations and identify solutions to operational challenges
  • Manage foreign carrier tariff alerts and escalate issues to avoid penalties
  • Track tariff penalties and charges and review/approve tariff payments on behalf of Transportation Dept.

Education:

  • Various Spotfire Dashboards and Reports

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of NS network and network of foreign carriers in greater Chicago region
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to dig deeply into issues to identify root causes and propose operational solutions
  • Ability to engage and communicate with individuals from different railroads and various trades
  • Comfort interacting with public officials and high-level corporate officers of NS and foreign carriers
  • Ability to work non-standard work week with varying shifts as assigned in a 24/7 operation (including weekends and holidays)
