About us
Open Hand Atlanta
Since 1988, Atlanta based nonprofit Open Hand has served thousands of Georgians suffering disability caused by chronic and critical illnesses, or who are at risk for developing conditions associated with preventable diseases, such as obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Since its founding, Open Hand has evolved by re-inventing the basic “meals on wheels” model - developing instead a proven method of integrating healthy food and nutrition education not only to help our clients better manage chronic illness, but also as a means of preventing disease and disability. The need for such a model has never been more urgent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases are now the number one cause of death and disability in the United States, killing 1.7 million Americans per year.
Over 15,000 volunteers from corporate, civic, school and faith-based groups come through our doors each year to help us package and deliver over 4,000 meals daily to those in need of balanced nutrition for an improved quality of life. Not only does Open Hand provide nourishment through food but combines the balanced meals with education from a staff of Community Health Dietitians to help build community and comprehensive wellness.
Open Hand continues to partner with like-minded organizations in order to maximize impact and sustainability within our community. We continually seek out relationships that strengthen the connection between nutrition and health, as well as other components of a comprehensive wellness program.
