ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The County Fire Department
is managed under contract by the California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE) with the assistance of seventeen volunteer fire companies. The County Fire Department stands ready to protect life, property, and the environment utilizing trained and equipped personnel. The mission includes structural and wildland fire control, first response medical care and appropriate assistance to other agencies during emergency incidents.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, to do storekeeping work in receiving, storing, issuing and shipping of equipment, tools, parts, accessories and supplies; and to perform related work as required.

During fire season and/or emergency incidents, the incumbent may be required to work extended hours and on weekends

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Checks equipment, tools, parts, accessories and supplies received against requisitions; issues and delivers tools, parts, accessories and supplies to shop employees; maintains and operates a perpetual computerized inventory system; takes physical inventories and keeps records of meter readings, equipment, fixed assets, tools, parts, accessories and supplies; operates various equipment including forklifts used in storekeeping work; maintains computerized inventory and repair-order records; segregates, store and purchases supplies and parts in bins and racks; packages and crates tools for shipment; keeps parts and supplies clean and the warehouse in a neat and orderly manner; answers telephone and radio calls to shop; assists with purchases of equipment and supplies following State and County policies and procedures; checks in all daily shipments; purchases and maintains firefighter personal protective equipment in accordance with National Firefighter Protection Association standards; provides and assists County volunteers with structure and wildland safety gear, assists with safety gear for CAL FIRE personnel; maintains buildings and grounds around compound; assists staff with supplies and errands; provides miscellaneous support to employees and County volunteers; fills equipment and supply requests from fire stations; supervises firefighters on a variety of jobs while on the compound; loads and unloads trucks; checks fuel levels and keeps fuel logs; assists with the support of emergency incidents supporting and maintaining supply lines between the incident, warehouse, and vendors; assists with returning incident base equipment to warehouse; serves as property custodian for State and Federal Excess property and equipment.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:

Knowledge of:
A variety of parts, accessories, and equipment; routine clerical and purchasing records and procedures; storekeeping procedures, including stock ordering, receiving and issuing; perpetual inventory procedures using a computerized system.

Ability to:
Use and interpret manufacturers' catalogs and parts list; prepare requisitions for tools, parts, accessories and supplies; pack and crate heavy articles for shipment; keep necessary manual and computer records; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative relationships with others; and operate a personal computer and a forklift.

These standards are typically attained with
three years of experience in a parts storeroom or as a parts counterman involving extensive ordering, inventory, and related record keeping duties.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid California driver license. An incumbent must obtain certification to operate a forklift within six months from the date of hire.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have at least one year’s experience with local, state or federal government purchasing practices; a basic knowledge of the federal Incident Command System (ICS); experience or knowledge of ordering or handling household and office supplies as well as basic emergency medical supplies and equipment; a basic knowledge of firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment, and /or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for firefighting personal protective equipment; experience driving a large class C truck on rural roads, familiarity with navigating off highway and rural areas of Shasta County; one year experience driving a forklift; have experience developing and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of cooperators including vendors, state and federal employees and vendors; a willingness and interest in learning new skills and a wide range of topics related to firefighting; and experience in maintenance or repair of small equipment.

THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES

Holidays:
12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year.

Vacation:
10 working days a year during the first three years of service; 15 working days a year - 4 through 9 years of service; 17 working days a year - 10 through 15 years of service; 20 working days a year - 16 or more years of service. Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment. For purposes of vacation accrual, a working day is no more than 8 hours.

Sick Leave:
96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual. Employees terminating in good standing after completion of 5 years of continuous service will receive a pro-rata payoff of accumulated sick leave. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement. Note - accrued sick leave may not be used until after three months of employment. Accrued paid leave benefits are used in conjunction with FMLA/CFRA as appropriate.

Bereavement:
Maximum of 24 hours for each non-concurrent death in the immediate family.

Health Plan:
Shasta County contracts with PERS for medical insurance and has an alternative Blue Cross plan. Employees in the Teamsters bargaining unit are insured through a Teamsters Trust plan. Depending on the plan selected, the County pays most, or all, of the employee premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent premium. Contributions are made for a portion of a retiree's insurance premium.

Dental Plan:
The County pays a portion of the employee's and dependents' premium for dental insurance. The employee pays the full premium during the first six months of coverage.

Vision Plan:
The County pays the employee premium and employees may enroll dependents at their own expense.

Life Insurance:
The County pays the premium for life insurance for most employees. The amount of coverage varies by bargaining unit.

Retirement:
The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security. Members hired prior to May 8, 2011 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 55 benefit. Members hired after May 8, 2011 but before January 1, 2013 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 60 benefit. Members hired after January 1, 2013 are covered under the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) with a benefit formula of 2% @ 62. Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.

Employees pay 7.75% of his or her salary, on a pre-tax basis for a period of time as specified in his or her labor contact, or Personnel Rules as appropriate.

Miscellaneous:

  • Deferred Compensation plans available through specified companies.

  • IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.

  • Optional insurance products are available.
