Job Description


General Summary

Under frequent supervision, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is a multi-skilled individual who assists the patient with activities of daily living, while maintaining a quiet, therapeutic and clean environment. The PCA will spend the vast majority of time at the bedside meeting the patient’s physical, psychosocial and environmental needs based on an individualized plan of care. Patient population served includes infants, children and adults.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the nurse for specific patient related duties. Overall supervision from the manager of the patient care unit.


Qualifications


Qualifications

  • Current CNA certification from MBON
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Current AHA Health Care Provider (CPR) card.

Working Conditions

Works inside, in a clean well-lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential

for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, such as chemicals and cleaning agents, requiring the

observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. Employee may be exposed to physical/verbal abuse by a patient/family member. In the event this occurs, report to immediate supervisor as soon as possible.

Works an assigned shift, depending on the needs of the unit. May be expected to work on rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to float to another unit to support staffing and patient needs. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

Standing, sitting, bending, and walking are required three (3) to five (5) hours/shift. Involves heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and

pulling of patients and equipment weighing in excess of one hundred 100 lbs, in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy.

Fingering, reaching for, grasping, and handling equipment/supplies zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift. Requires hearing/listening to

differentiate sounds three (3) to five (5) hours/shift. Visual acuity is necessary to read charts, document, and use various

instruments/equipment zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift. Requires appropriate listening and speaking skills to converse with patients,

staff, visitors, and physicians zero (0) to three (3) hours/shift.
