FULL-TIME POLICE CHIEF POSITION: Applicants must be MN POST Board licensed or eligible and have a valid MN Driver’s license by date of application. Qualifications are a minimum two-year degree in law enforcement. Full-time experience as a licensed Police Officer preferred. Performs responsible police work involving the protection and safety of the community through prevention and control of crime, preserving peace, regulating traffic, and providing emergency services; and performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:

· Patrols the community to enforce laws, detect and prevent crime, and protect life and property.

· Manages and records all P.O.S.T requirements and executes all mandated administrative reports.

· Apprehends and arrests law violators, prepares reports of incidents and arrests, and assists in prosecution of law violators.

· Collects and preserves evidence; may take pictures; preserves the crime scene.

· Enforces City Code, traffic and parking laws, operates radar, and writes violations.

· Responds to accident scenes and fires, administers first aid until more qualified personnel arrive on the scene, directs traffic flow, investigates accidents and prepares reports.

· Testifies in court as arresting or investigating officer.

· Checks businesses when on duty to ensure no vandalism or break-ins have occurred and doors and windows are locked.

· Performs routine criminal and accident investigations; assists with investigation of serious crimes and deaths.

· Interviews witnesses and victims and takes their statements, interrogates suspects.

· Transports prisoners and suspects.

· Assists other agencies such as the county, area communities, and the State Highway Patrol as requested.

· Maintains high visibility while on patrol; takes actions or mediates disputes as necessary to prevent crime.

· Contacts law enforcement and social service agencies to obtain information or assistance; contact towing companies.

· Maintains crowd control at special events and disaster scenes.

· May locate and remove stray animals and transports to the pound on occasion.

· Removes hazards in roadways and on sidewalks and places barricades as needed, when public works staff are off duty.

· Reviews logs made by other officers/departments to determine activity in the community and potential problems.

· Speaks at schools or to community groups; may participate in bicycle safety, finger printing, and other public relations and crime prevention activities.

· Notifies citizens of death or accident of a relative.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

· Working knowledge of police policies, procedures, and techniques.

· Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, and of department rules and regulations.

· Considerable skill in handling and discharging firearms in an efficient and safe manner.

· Considerable skill to expertly drive a motor vehicle, sometimes under adverse conditions and at high speeds.

· Considerable ability to analyze situations and determine appropriate action and to respond quickly and appropriately to crisis and emergency situations.

· Considerable ability to observe and remember people, facts, and circumstances.

· Considerable ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with others to maintain order, including dealing with difficult or violent people.

· Considerable ability to work independently, without direct supervision.

· Working ability to prepare accurate and thorough reports.

· Working ability to apply laws to specific incidents.

· Working ability to investigate crime and accidents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or equivalent and be licensed, as a Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota. Must be certified as a First Responder, and must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00 - $27.00 per hour
