Midcoast Maine Community Action is a non-profit human services agency, located in the southern mid coast area of Maine. For 50 years, MMCA has worked to benefit and support individuals and families in the communities we serve through an array of programs and services that include early childhood education (Head Start/Early Head Start); WIC nutrition counseling; emergency housing, rental, and utility assistance; parenting education; and health insurance marketplace navigation. We are seeking qualified applicants to fill openings in our Head Start centers in Bath, Brunswick, and Newcastle Maine. The program provides a continuum of services for children ages three to five encompassing education, family engagement, health, nutrition and disabilities content.
Responsibilities:
Teachers are responsible for daily planning and implementation of the early childhood curriculum; providing a safe, nurturing learning environment; and supervising the classroom to ensure a smooth flow of daily activities and events. Working together as part of the center team, the teachers conduct child assessments, meet with families, encourage parent engagement in their children’s education, and serve as role models for parents in educating their children.
Head Start teacher positions are full-time, 40 hours per week and are school year (44 to 46 weeks). Some positions teach in collaboration classrooms with local school districts; these positions require Department of Education O81 certification. MMCA has openings in its Bath, Brunswick, and Newcastle Centers. Additional classrooms are planned for Topsham, Harpswell, and Waldoboro.
Qualifications:
- An Associate degree, bachelor’s preferred in Early Childhood Education or a closely related field is required. Infant-Toddler or Pre-K Child Development Associates certification may be considered if accompanied by prior related experience.
- Applicants with 081 certification will be given preference in public school pre-kindergarten collaboration classrooms.
- Prior experience working with young children is essential; must have an interest in working with children from low-income families.
- Must be able to lift a child (up to approximately 40 pounds) and be capable of physically bending to a child's level or sitting on the floor.
Other Requirements:
- Prior to starting employment, must be able to pass fingerprinted criminal background, child protective services, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record checks, as required by state and federal childcare licensing regulations, that indicate no previous record of involvement with child abuse or exploitation and no disqualifying criminal or motor vehicle record that would preclude working with children.
- Persons offered employment must also provide a physician’s health statement, immunization records, and TB screening.

These positions are benefits eligible. Pay ranges: Pay is dependent on experience, credential, and other qualifications. Preschool Teachers are currently eligible for a $200-per-month bonus, and a $2500 sign on bonus.
