The Able Baker is a small locally owned bakery in Maplewood, New Jersey. We bake cakes, cookies, pies and more, all from scratch on premises. We also pull a great shot of espresso. We’re a happy place; well-known for our scones, GF/DF banana bread, and hand-decorated sugar cookies.

We opened our doors in October 2011, and doubled the space in 2016. We have
appeared in the New York Times, Real Simple, NJ Monthly, and more. We stay involved in our community, and donate generously to organizations that champion education, equality, and diversity.

We are looking for full-time and or Part-time Production Bakers to join our team. The kitchen is a collaborative group; flexibility and a willingness to contribute wherever needed is essential. High standards, fast pace, and solid pastry skills are necessary to keep up with high-volume output.

The majority of the workload is production: mixing and baking, prepping for the next day, and finishing products as needed. Depending on your skill set, part of each day may be spent on frosting cupcakes, assembling layer cakes, decorating sugar cookies, or making pies. We’d love to know what you do best and enjoy doing most.

• Mix doughs, batters, frostings and glazes, all from scratch
• Bake off all products to recipe specs
• Finish baked goods using frostings, icings, and fillings
• Share in prep work, including chopping fruits and nuts, mixing our GF flour blend, restocking ingredients, etc.
• Maintain a clean workspace, including washing dishes and cleaning/sanitizing kitchen
• Precision in working with allergens ingredient limitations (gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.)
• Support team efforts to complete workload efficiently. This includes non-baking tasks such as receiving shipments and rotating stock
• Meet standards of quality and productivity in high volume, fast-paced environment

Job Requirements

• Full-time, 40 hrs/week and part-time, 24-30 hrs/week
• 1 to 2 years experience in commercial pastry or baking, and/or completion of a pastry program
• Team player in the Kitchen, and with Front of House
• Positive, effective communication skills
• Able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time
• Able to work in fluctuating temperatures and hectic environment
• Be fully vaccinated and boosted by hire date
• Flexibility to work around customer and holiday demands. Weekend availability required. Position may also require early mornings, evenings, and extended shifts during peak periods.
• Cookie decorating skills or pie making experience is a big plus, though not required
