STARTING SALARY: $52,374 to $78,562 /annually, DOQ

STATUS: Regular (benefitted)

Position may be underfilled as a Building Inspector I or II, depending on qualifications.

DEPARTMENT: Community Development

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Chief Building Official, inspects the construction and occupancy of new or existing structures including properties for compliance with one or more of the City’s building and zoning codes. Writes reports and advises builders and property owners on code and building permit requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Requires a High School diploma. Two years direct experience in building inspection and or directly related experience including education. Requires a valid Utah Driver’s License and ICC Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector. ICC certifications in building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical are preferred. Must be licensed with the State of Utah. A one-year probationary period is a pre-requisite to this position. Expected to gain considerable knowledge of all City building codes, zoning codes to include the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Energy Conservation Code, National Electric Code, and zoning ordinances; correct English usage, spelling, vocabulary, and arithmetic. Essential knowledge of all city ordinances. Great responsibility for the care, condition, and use of material and for making decisions affecting the activities of others; working with difficult people, not overlooking or disregarding safety code violations. Ability to professionally furnish and obtain information from other departments; requires well-developed sense of strategy and timing; constant contact with the public presenting data that may influence important decisions; frequent contacts involving the carrying out of programs and schedules. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
