Essential:
  • Basic literacy and ability to do fundamental math
  • 3-5 years relevant experience in quilting/sewing/embroidery fundamentals and instruction, and similar techniques and trends
  • Knowledge of function and troubleshooting of sewing machinery, including but not limited to sewing machines, long arm quilting machines, and additional tools for seamstress duties
  • Experience with classroom setup for, and teaching of, quilting and sewing by hand and by machine
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, ability to work with team of constituents, volunteers, and individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong networking skills and awareness of branding
  • Event-planning experience
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and coordinate multiple priorities with teammates simultaneously

Job Synopsis

The Quilting and Arts Coordinator is part of the West Coast Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) team that will run the day-to-day operations of the Global Center in Reedley, California two 8-hour days per week on Mondays and Tuesdays, hours negotiable. This position will ensure quilting and other art programming are run successfully.

Under the supervision of the Global Center Manager, this position will strategically engage partner organizations in the area to build on Global MCC relief, development, and peace initiatives. This can include projects like the annual Relief Sale at Fresno Pacific University, kit-building with senior living homes, philanthropy, and more. This position will contribute to the local team by building a stronger presence for West Coast MCC in Reedley, the Central Valley, and beyond.

  • 37.5% Education:

  • o Organizing and coordinating twice-a-week, morning quilting classes, scheduled for Mondays and/or Tuesdays
    o Teaching quilting skills from fundamentals to advanced techniques
    o Develop a diverse quilting and arts curriculum
    o Navigate a sewing machine, and related equipment; for example, basic functions like load a bobbin, change threading, simple troubleshooting, etc., to more complex like changing sewing pattern, stitch length, or determining the appropriate needle for material, etc.
    o Encourage and foster creativity
  • 25% Networking:

  • o Build and maintain relationships with local quilting circles or networks and senior centers/living facilities
    o Recruit instructors, volunteers, and students
    o Promote Global Center and MCC initiatives and programming
    o Organizing events or visits from local groups, including quilting groups or circles
  • 25% Administrative:

  • o Maintain attendance and reporting records of quilting and arts classes and other assigned programming
    o Oversee quilting and arts projects and senior citizen engagement
    o Monitor and coordinate quilting and arts supplies inventory, and communicate to supervisor as needed
    o Maintain a consistent schedule of courses
  • 12.5% Operations:

  • o Maintenance of Material Resource Center including, but not limited to, donation collection, organization of inventory, and other tasks, as needed.
    o Maintenance of Global Center services including, but not limited to, welcoming guests, volunteers and clients to the Center; processing invoices for Center-related purchases; articulating the mission/purpose of MCC and the Global Center; and other public-serving tasks, as needed.
    o Maintain a clean and organized public and work space, including Hospitality Lounge and Coffee Bar
  • Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis

  • Supervision: “No direct supervision.”

    Travel expectations: Travel up to 5% locally
