This Research Consultant will support the University of Washington's role as the operator of the National Science Foundations' cabled component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Regional Cabled Array (RCA). The RCA is the most advanced underwater cabled observatory in the ocean. This highly complex state-of-the-art observatory includes 900 km of high power and bandwidth fiber optic cables that stretch >500 km offshore Oregon. The cables provide power and real-time communications to >150 instruments of >30 different types and instrumented moorings that rise 2700 m above the seafloor. Data from all instruments/infrastructure are streamed live to shore at the speed of light and all science data are open to the public and a wide user community of researchers, educators, and industry.

The Research Consultant will be a key member of a team responsible for all aspects of data assurance and quality control (QA/QC) for the RCA, including evaluation, monitoring, and visualization of complex and diverse data flowing from the Cabled Array.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development, maintenance, documentation, and advancement of cloud-based applications and services to support big data harvest and packaging for data QA/QC, including: creation and maintenance of data extraction and analysis pipelines, efficient data handling and storage modules, continuous integration and deployment pipelines for cloud infrastructure; backend web development and API endpoint development and maintenance.

  • Maintenance and development of QA/QC dashboard pipelines and visualizations.

  • Actively participate in all aspects of the RCA Data QA/QC activities, both independently and in collaboration with the team and outside researchers, including: QA/QC analyses on myriad complex data sets using developed scripts, dashboards, and protocols; entry, maintenance, and verification of critical metadata for RCA assets and instruments; investigation and resolution of sensor and data issues; development of workflows and tools to increase efficiency and capabilities of data evaluations.

  • Directly contribute to data reports and presentations to communicate QA/QC and outreach activities to program leaders and the scientific community.

  • Engagement with upstream open-source communities to ensure implementation of emerging cloud-web-data technologies and visualization applications.


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or related discipline.

  • Two years of relevant experience with:

  • Extensive programming experience using multiple languages, including Python, JavaScript, HTML-CSS, and Linux.

  • Experience in software development working with Amazon Web Services and cloud-native technologies.

  • Experience working with large and complex data sets

  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

  • Proven problem-solving capabilities with the ability to exercise good , independent judgement on best courses of action with a proactive approach to assigned projects.


  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED:

  • Experiences working with bio-geo-chemical environmental data.

  • Experience in programming and software engineering in large scale collaborative projects.
