Position Summary:
FAU Harbor Branch, located in Ft. Pierce, is a research institute focusing on marine science and oceanography with over 200 scientists, staff and students that work and study at the site.
Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Research Coordinator - Fort Pierce, FL.
Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for collection of field samples (e.g., seawater, phytoplankton, and algae for nutrient and stable isotope analysis) and data using such instruments as Li-Cor, HANA, and/or YSI ProPlus.
  • Responsible for the processing of water, phytoplankton, and macrophytes for chemical analysis, as well as for conducting some laboratory analyses.
  • Maintain a database of water and tissue samples from collection to final data entry.
  • Compiles and analyzes environmental data into written reports and publications. Will be expected to actively and widely read scientific literature to become familiar with field in order to contribute to scientific writing and data analyses.
  • Assists the Principal Investigator and Research Scientist with all phases of water quality and harmful algal bloom research, including sample collection and analysis, statistical analysis of data, and preparation of proposals, reports, and publications.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience required.

Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. required.

Valid Florida's driver's license required or the ability to obtain a Florida driver's license within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:

Master's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science with three years of applicable experience.

Experience in water quality analysis or monitoring.

Experience with maintenance of environmental laboratory or field sampling equipment.

Experience in data management, statistical analysis, and use of Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Access.

Record of scientific publishing (please attach scientific writing sample to application).

Position may require occasional overnight travel (3-5 nights) to assist with field research.

Must be able to communicate with all levels of employees and managers and work collaboratively.

Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Experience operating small boats, following standard operating procedures, washing laboratory glassware, algal identification, and collecting water samples.

$38,000 - $41,000 per year.
