Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Research Technician position. The Research Technician is a full-time, one-year term position, renewable annually, starting at $19.76/hour - commensurate with experience. The Research Technician position will be shared equally between the Kneeland and the Cohen labs at Amherst College. Professor Kneeland’s work focuses on adult clinical psychology and how to improve how individuals manage their unwanted emotions. The Research Technician will supervise a range of study types including single session, experimental, and longitudinal studies. When working with Professor Cohen, the research technician will aid in studies on visual perception and memory in the Cohen Lab at Amherst College. The research projects will include experiments using computers, virtual reality (VR), and flight simulators to present participants with a variety of stimuli.
Duties for both labs will include helping design experiments, create stimuli, collect and analyze data, and prepare results for public consumption. In addition, lab management and undergraduate training duties will be required as needed. Both research labs involve working with human research participants both remotely and in person as part of ongoing research studies.
The research assistant is expected to contribute to all aspects of the lab’s research activities, including training and mentoring a diverse group of undergraduate students in the Kneeland and Cohen Labs and contributing to an inclusive environment for students. The Research Assistant will also assist with lab management on a regular basis.
Summary of Responsibilities
Duties shared across the labs include:
  • Manage participant recruitment, screening, and oversee data collection
  • Supervise undergraduate workers with their projects and answer questions as needed
  • Data entry, management, and some routine laboratory work
Research
  • Perform experimental design, data collection, and data analysis on research projects under the supervision of PIs Kneeland and Cohen
  • The research assistant will have the opportunity to contribute research for publication and presentation at research conferences
Training undergraduate students with basic laboratory techniques
  • Working with PIs Kneeland and Cohen and undergraduate student research assistants
  • Training a diverse set of undergraduate students with basic laboratory techniques in clinical psychology and neuroscience
  • Working to ensure a respectful, inclusive environment
Lab management and other duties as requested
  • Preparation and inventory management of data
  • Maintenance, storage, and inventory of lab chemical reagents
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
  • Strong attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of basic laboratory technique and safety
  • Ability to supervise and manage in a productive and supportive environment
Preferred:
  • Experience working in psychology or neuroscience or other advanced training in relevant field
  • Experience with data entry and analysis
