Safety Officer Job at Kent School District
BASIC FUNCTION:
The position’s main responsibility is to maintain safety and security on Kent School District property.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

E = ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Respond to emergencies occurring on school grounds, fire, and intrusion alarms. (E)
- Operate video surveillance
- Search building interior and exterior for criminal (E)
- Prevent unauthorized access to school grounds by intruders and apprehend suspects who have committed crimes. (E)
- Prevent any illegal activities and substance abuse; and enforce the district’s policies and procedures related to staff and (E)
- Conduct investigations; produce written/typed reports, logs, interview potential suspects, witnesses, and victims of crimes; assists police with criminal investigations as needed; maintain confidential information as (E)
- Serve court documents as needed at private (E)
- Conduct full investigations of crimes and submit reports that are reviewed by police and submitted for (E)
- Maintain proficient skills in security techniques; attend and successfully complete mandatory training as directed by the district and requirements in RCW 320.124 (1214-S.SL). (E)
- Maintain a positive working relationship with outside agencies, students, and staff. (E)
- Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned. (E)
- Required to wear a full uniform (including duty gear and ballistic vest). (E)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a valid AED/first aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
- Must have a valid Washington State driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Training and/or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness, preferred.
- Training and/or experience working with diverse racial, ethnic, sexually oriented, and cultural groups preferred.
- Ability to speak multiple languages.
- Maintain requirements to drive emergency vehicles per Washington State Patrol and the district.
Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of security and safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic law enforcement procedures, criminal laws, search and seizure procedures, and the legal process.
- Ability to maintain control of tense and potentially dangerous situations; chase, physically control, and apprehend suspects.
- Ability to accurately assess emergency situations, prioritize and coordinate responses.
- Knowledge and skill in self-defense.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Ability to operate two-way radios and other communication devices.
- Ability to conduct lawful investigations and provide appropriate documentation.
- Ability to guide and instruct students.
- Ability to operate a computer and learn the use of specific software programs.
- Ability to evaluate, control, investigate, and secure crime/fire scenes before arrival of law enforcement/fire department.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships with staff, students, the public and law enforcement/fire department personnel.
- Skills in communicating with individuals and groups of all ages, backgrounds, and educational levels.
- Ability to demonstrate security and safety monitoring skills; make effective decisions in a thoughtful and timely fashion.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Power-Point, Publisher, Excel, Genetec Security Desk, Rapid Responder, Google Maps, One Note, Outlook, Teams and Word.
- Ability to demonstrate effective public relations skills.
- Requires substantial visual concentration and physical dexterity.
- Drive a district patrol vehicle.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment:
- This position also requires candidate to work outdoors in inclement weather; be constantly aware of personal safety; risk attack with weapons in confrontational situations; represent the district on potentially controversial matters; physically restrain students or adults; deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; and respond to medical emergencies that may result in exposure to danger, risk, or infectious disease.
- Candidate will also be required to be accessible during off-hours to return to work for emergencies or work extra and irregular hours.
- This position also requires candidate to part of a rotational on-call response after hours.
Physical demands:
- The work is of a manual nature and requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, stand for long periods of time, twist, reach, push, and pull, and use far and near visual acuity.
- At times the work is of a strenuous nature and the employee must be able to lift or pack weights up to 50 pounds unassisted to shoulder height using proper personal lifting procedures.
- Weights over 50 pounds will be lifted with proper safety equipment and assistance.
- Work requires adherence to established dress guidelines, which includes provisions for safety.
- An employee may be required to work overtime or other shifts on short notice.
- Some positions may be required to work a swing shift or modified day shift.
- Regular attendance is required.
Hazards:
The work requires the employee to work around asbestos, chemicals, hazardous materials, fumes, paints, dusts, electrical and mechanical equipment, confined space, and fluid hazards, which requires the employee to follow all proper federal, state, and local codes, safety policies and procedures, and SDS information and to wear proper personal protection equipment.
