Overview:

This Senior Epidemiologist is a member of an interdisciplinary team of public health consultants assisting Florida in reaching its strategic public health goals. This position requires a considerable exercise of independent judgment, excellent interpersonal skills, good computer skills, and the ability to perform against high standards of excellence.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Engage with stakeholders, and other public health partners by phone, email, video conference and face to face meeting to determine user needs for data ingestion and use Merlin and FRANK.
  • Identify barriers to use of the systems, brainstorm, workshop, and propose solutions to directly respond to user feedback and anticipate user needs.
  • Manage projects to directly respond to user feedback and anticipate user needs.
  • Conduct statistical analysis of surveillance data in Merlin (i.e., reportable disease surveillance system), ESSENCE-FL (i.e., syndromic surveillance system), and Vital Statistics to define and monitor the prevalence and geographic distribution of infectious diseases, and other diseases and conditions of public health significance.
  • Complete progress reports
  • Validate content for infectious, and other diseases and conditions of public health importance as part of enrolling new laboratories and facilities in electronic laboratory reporting, and electronic case reporting including reviewing test messages to ensure all data are included and accurate
  • Attend, participate, and lead Merlin development meetings
  • Learn and apply new techniques for data management and visualization
  • Provide technical assistance, consultative services, and direction for development, implementation, evaluation and expansion of infectious diseases and other diseases and conditions of public health significance data sources within the Merlin, ELR, and FRANK systems.
  • Design and compile reports, including routine and ad hoc reports for staff at national, state, and local level and the public
  • Update surveillance materials and guidance

Qualifications:

  • 1 year of experience and a Master’s degree in a public health or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience with state-based disease surveillance systems, including reportable disease surveillance systems, syndromic surveillance systems, and immunization registries.
  • 2- 5 years of experience with the Microsoft Office suite including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • 2-5 years of programming experience with Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), R software, SQL, or Python software.
  • 2-5 years of experience engaging with, and producing reports for stakeholders, including state and local epidemiologists, medical providers, and the general public using disease-related data.
  • Completion of one graduate-level biostatistics course.
