Senior IT Analyst Job at Duke University
Duke University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) Centralized Storage, Virtualization, and Backups team handles the design, configuration, and support of the Duke University centralized IT Storage, Virtualization, and Backup environments. Storage is currently comprised of onsite NAS (Dell/EMC, NetApp, TrueNAS/ZFS), Block Storage (Dell/EMC), Ceph, and cloud storage offerings. Virtualization is currently comprised of Cisco UCS and x86 server-based VMware clusters. Backups are comprised of Rubrik and Veeam solutions. Work in this position involves emerging technologies that meet customer requirements for reliability, performance, and data protection. Responsibilities will include the design, implementation and maintenance of these infrastructures. Significant interaction with other IT staff, administrative and academic support groups expected.
DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED:
- Perform application upgrades and maintenance, performance monitoring, and system design for Storage, Backups, and VMware ESXi infrastructure.
- Provide technical support and on-site problem resolution for the supported environments.
- Work within OIT and at Duke to evaluate requirements and to ensure efficient use of resources to meet customer needs.
- Ability to identify, integrate, and develop automation tools to improve the efficiency, consistency, and quality of the infrastructure environments.
- Evaluate, design and implement emerging technologies to upgrade and expand OIT's offerings where appropriate.
- Participate in development of training programs to promote staff development within the systems group to assure cross-training and adequate support for OIT supported systems.
- Interact with vendor sales and support representatives to resolve software and hardware problems and to keep abreast of emerging technologies.
- Maintain liaison with representatives of other University IT departments and organizations to insure effective communication of needs across any organizational boundaries; expand communications to other infrastructure groups and organizations in higher education throughout the region.
- Prepare documentation pertaining to the systems supported by OIT and organize and present this information in a clear, concise, user-friendly format to the appropriate audience.
- Continue to build on existing capacity management processes focused on growth trends, forecasting, available capacity and performance to continually meet the needs of the customers in an ever-changing environment.
- Make recommendations for hardware and software purchases/leases to maintain adequate resources to meet our requirements and budgets.
- Represent the OIT Systems department as subject matter expert on project teams and enterprise planning groups.
SOFT SKILLS:
- Ability to work well with other system administrators as part of a systems support team.
- Clear and concise communications with customers and technical support personnel.
- Vision and planning skills to incorporate emerging technologies.
- Ability to write technical reports and business cases that translate the appropriate details to a non-technical audience.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
The most qualified candidates will exhibit demonstrated ability or experience in the following areas.
- Minimum 5 years or VCP certification in system administration experience in a distributed environment.
- Specific skills sought include in-depth knowledge of Cisco UCS, x86 servers, VMware ESXi, NAS, Rubrik backups, fiber channel SAN and block storage arrays.
- Candidate must be ready to provide support in a mission critical, 24x7 environment.
- The ability to work independently and as a team member, managing multiple assignments in a well-organized manner is important. This position requires significant interface with other technical staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Programming and Scripting experience using tools such as kickstart/pxe/bash scripts/powershell/python/go
- Experience with Splunk or other log analysis engines
- Experience with performance monitoring and related tools
EDUCATION:
Required:
- BA or BS in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience and course work.
- Minimum 5 years of experience supporting a large-scale virtualized environment.
**Hybrid remote position. Must be available on-site for outages on short notice.
