JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior School Community Specialist (SSCS) will assist with the implementation of the school-wide support and community outreach program. This role is critically important in the aftermath of the pandemic, where a specialist can reinforce the need for accelerated educational efforts to address learning gaps. The Senior School Community Specialist (SSCS) conducts outreach and designs programming to improve student attendance, student engagement, and family connections to school. This outreach includes working during the summer to connect with disengaged students and their families to reconnect them with their school. The specialist can also work to establish and nurture community partnerships and collaborations in support of reconnecting students and families. The SSCS can also reestablish the school as an accessible and reliable source of social-emotional and cultural support for families. The SSCS develops and implements programs and strategies that will establish partnerships and collaborations with community agencies, corporate organizations, and families.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED required or equivalent experience is required, or Associates degree, 60 credits or relevant experience in the field.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES

  • Initiate connections with families of students who were chronically absent and who had lower attendance rates to ensure that students are fully engaged in summer school opportunities, both in-person and virtually to support closing the achievement gap for students. This includes making home visits, phone contact, and utilizing community supports.
  • Conduct summer outreach to develop and establish community partnerships so others in the community can support the schools and students in increasing student engagement by offering additional opportunities, supports, and enrichment for students.
  • Serve as mentor/coach to other school community specialists in the school.
  • Assist in building a positive internal school community
  • Support teachers with efforts to build positive relationships with students
  • Create a mentoring program for students to support them in their academics and personal development
  • Organize and lead school events and town hall meetings that encourage community connection and investment in the school culture
  • Provide support to students with a variety of social-emotional needs.
  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the school in common areas and hallways.
  • Make phone contact with the student’s parents/guardians throughout the school year
  • Develop strategies to ensure parent and family involvement in the school.
  • Assist in the coordination of parent/community advocacy and support for the school.
  • Coordinate events and celebrations including culturally diverse activities that affirm the international heritage of all students and their families.
  • Initiate community outreach, using appropriate cultural and linguistic strategies, to connect with disengaged families throughout the school year.
  • Identify resources collaborators/speakers to facilitate dialogues and presentations for the student body.
  • Establish formal/informal partnerships with community and corporate agencies.
