Scope: The Social Media Manager will be responsible for managing the people, processes and projects of the Social Media team.. This person will streamline workflow, strategy and partnerships for a team that brings together content and audience engagement to develop Sierra Club’s online identity while deepening relationships with internal and external audiences to build a strong social media community. The Social Media Manager will balance many competing priorities and stakeholders in order to tactically and procedurally drive Sierra Club values and messages to a broad set of strategic audiences ranging from Sierra Club staff and volunteers to movement partners and national influencers.
We’re looking for an organized storyteller, organizer, and leader who can support a team in bringing to life a people-centered content strategy highlighting the Sierra Club’s programmatic and narrative organizing work. The Social Media Manager should have a deep understanding of racial justice and environmental justice and how the two intersect. The person in this role should also be someone who is consistently tracking social trends, along with movement in narratives and culture moments that help the environmental movement do the vital work of protecting people and our planet.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- People Management: Supporting and developing a team of social media strategists, organizers, and storytellers to ensure that goals, social campaigns, audience engagement and growth strategies are effective, and deadlines are met successfully. Training internal staff on social media best practices and brand standards.
- Planning: Working with the Director of Social Media to develop long and short term strategic plans for the team and social platforms. Track and report insights from quarterly social media reports and audience segment engagement.
- Programming: Working with the Director of Social Media to build out our emerging influencer program (relationship building, talent management, and aligning opportunities with our organizing and campaign programs). Create and build a yearly social media schedule, maintaining the day to day operation of national social media platforms.
- Process and Platform Management: Developing, adapting, and supporting a governance structure for our social program, including social media processes for internal and external Sierra Club audiences and key stakeholders. Training internal staff on social media best practices and brand standards.
- Project Management: Oversee social campaign, project, and platform launches to ensure goals, promotional processes, and deadlines are met successfully – working with internal departments and key stakeholders to curate LIVE events and messaging for national social media; program and national campaigns.
This position directly relates to the 24-hour news cycle which will sometimes require weeknight and weekend hours.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- People Management. Skillful at managing individuals and leading teams with a diversity of identities and skill sets to contribute at their highest level – fostering relationships that support individual and collective ability to grow, thrive, and work effectively together. Proficient at using clear effective communication to delegate, problem solve, and make decisions that further social media team goals and strategic vision.
- Process and Project Management. A proven history of developing the processes and infrastructure needed to build, support and grow a data-informed, values-driven, and story-based social media program – successfully navigating competing priorities, internal and external stakeholders. A track record of bringing social programs to scale – with a clear ability to prioritize and delegate tasks, manage resources, assess problems, report progress and analyze performance, ensuring success of social media workflow and key stakeholder engagement.
- Creative Thinking. Expertise in a range of social media channels, with a proven history of adapting tactics, metrics, innovation, and outcomes in line with social trends – sourcing out of the box solutions to meet goals and concentrated outputs.
- Copywriting. Ability to create and coach teams in how to develop content that “hooks” the online community member, directs to an action, adapts to changing sentiment, and stays up to date to bolster social media tone and content.
- Relationship Building. Navigates complex organizational structures to foster collaborative partnerships and authentic relationships across the organization in order to keep workflow consistent and shared goals attainable.
- Equity. You model effective equity analysis and practice and demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how group dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, partnerships, campaigns and coalition work. Your decision-making is consistent, intentional, and committed to creating equitable outcomes at all levels. You have led high-performing and leaderful teams across group identities. You intervene when challenging group dynamics play out, in ways that build understanding, trust, and deeper self-awareness of team members.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
- Platforms, Tools and Software. Deep expertise with social media platforms e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok. Robust knowledge of social media software e.g., Meltwater, Sprout, Hootsuite
- Training. Experience with training in best practices, trends, and new technology
- Social Strategy and Management. Experience growing and managing cross-platform social media programs with a large subscriber base, content strategy and design, strategic audience engagement – with a proven history of adapting tactics, metrics, innovation, and outcomes aligned with social trends
- Organization. Top-notch organization skills. There’s a lot to keep track of in this role, and managing multiple priorities, timeliness, and attention to detail is key.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $95,000.
The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.
This is a category 4 exempt non-represented, supervisory position.
