POSITION OVERVIEW
The Special Education Nurse will serve all Legacy Traditional Schools in the Las Vegas region as a member of the MET in the identification, evaluation, and provision of special education services for students with disabilities. With deep knowledge and expertise in nursing, this individual will be a subject-matter expert in health and human development, and will work to ensure access and opportunity for students with disabilities in a public school setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Specific tasks, responsibilities or competencies may be documented in the incumbent’s performance objectives as outlined by the incumbent’s immediate supervisor or manager.

Serve as a multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET) member for students suspected of or confirmed to have disabilities
- Conduct health assessment for students with IEP/MET evaluations at LTS NV campuses, as requested
Attend IEP/MET/504 meetings when applicable including, but not limited to Health Impairment, Orthopedic Impairment, TBI
- Write and maintain Individual Health Plans for students with chronic health conditions
- Educate Unlicensed Assistive Personnel on accommodations and care needs for students with IEP/504/IHPs
- Conduct annual hearing, vision, spinal, height and weight screenings for special education students
- Conduct secondary screenings for general education students who failed initial vision/hearing screenings within 10 days of initial evaluation
- Send vision/hearing referrals for all students with failing screenings
- Documentation of screenings and assessments in the student information system
- Assist with general education screenings as needed for all Nevada campuses including hearing, vision, height, weight and spinal screenings according to Nevada Law
- Develop training and/or consult with general and special educators on the implications of students’ healthcare needs while accessing instruction and attending school
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor to meet the health and wellness needs of students
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Experience, Education, Licensure/Certification
Required
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Nevada, license in good standing
- Bachelor’s in Science of Nursing (BSN)
- Must possess Nevada Department of Education School Nurse Endorsement or be able to obtain within 1 year of hire.
Preferred
- 2+ years of School Health experience preferred
- National School Nurse Certification (NCSN) preferred
Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of disability laws and their application in a public school setting, including the IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its 2008 amendments
- Positively interact with all students.
- Create a safe environment in which students feel safe.
- Ability to identify individual student medical needs.
- Good communication skills with students, coworkers, administration and parents.
- Ability to collaborate with other school staff.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance.
- Must possess strong communication, organizational, analytical, and written skills
- Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Must have ability to interact positively with teachers and administrators
