Job Summary
- Performs and/or assists with various types of radiologic procedures, following protocols established by the radiologists. Prepares, maintains and operates radiographic equipment in a safe and responsible manner. Follows appropriate radiation safety guidelines. Produces quality radiographs for interpretation by a radiologist.
Education
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
- Non Degree Program: Graduate from a two-year AMA approved radiologic technology program. (Required)
Licenses and Certifications
- BLS - Basic Life Support (Required)
- ARRT - American Registered Radiologic Technologist (Preferred)
Experience
- 1 Year experience in radiology (Preferred)

General Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities
Radiographic Procedures
- Consistently performs high quality diagnostic images according to department routine. Critiques radiographic images, determines diagnostic quality, and submits satisfactory radiographs for interpretation.
- Demonstrates knowledge of general radiographic routines, including chest, abdomen, neuro, bone routines, and spine series. Demonstrates ability to perform portable examinations of the chest, abdomen, and other body regions. Demonstrates proficiency in contrast media screening, preparation, and administration.
- Prepares patient for imaging study, explains procedures, transfers patient to table, positions patient and assists patient at the end of procedure.
- Verifies patient identification before performing any diagnostic procedure. This includes verifying a patient's identity on their ID bracelet.
- Follows prescribed protocols in administrating general and specific images.
- Adjusts equipment, determines proper voltage, current, and desired exposure time; arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain position of patient; adjusts lead shield; and selects proper film.
- Ascertains patient status during entire procedure for possible complications.
- Teaches radiology students as needed.
Documentation
- Documents all actions and communications in Primordial, RIS, PACS and other required systems in a manner which will hold up to legal scrutiny.
- Communicates medical report information as required according to departmental procedures.
- Reports errors in documentation, noncompliance with policies and or processes, etc. to the area's direct Manager to ensure proper and timely corrective action.
Radiation Safety
- Follows the established radiation safety guidelines to protect the patient, co- workers and oneself from unnecessary radiation. Ensures the safety of others during the exam by having them follow radiation safety guidelines.
- Provides proper protection and shielding for the patient and self to protect parts of the body that are being examined from unnecessary exposure to radiation. Documents date of LMP on patients of childbearing age.
- Ensures to only radiate the area of interest when performing exams; shields the patient's gonadal region, especially with children and adults of childbearing age.
- Limits repeat exposures to the patient by utilizing proper technique, positioning, and equipment set up.
- Wears radiation monitoring badges at all times while on duty to comply with ALARA.
- Wears protective equipment including lead aprons, lead gloves, thyroid shield, leaded glasses when in the radiation field (fluoroscopic exams and/or holding patients). Stands behind the protective barrier, when not needed in the radiation field. Limits exposure by either limiting exposure time in the radiation field or increases distance from the radiation source.
Unit Supplies & Equipment Maintenance
- Maintains and stocks adequate unit supplies and equipment.
- Organizes and conducts inventories and requests supplies when needed.
- Ensures all supplies and equipment are ready for use and with appropriate expiration dates.
- Maintains current knowledge base of instrumentation, equipment, and supplies used, and manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and sterilization.
- Maintains current knowledge of the quantity and location of all supplies and the status of equipment.
- Exercises proper handling and care of all equipment. Notifies the correct department upon equipment failure.
Patient Customer Service
- Maintains excellent public relations with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
- Addresses issues or potential issues involving customer service and identifies process improvement opportunities.
- Ensures that patients, their families, visitors, customers and staff members are treated with kindness and respect.
- Collaborates with Hospital personnel to ensure optimal patient care and promote a positive working environment in unit and Hospital.
Daily Radiology Procedures
- Performs all procedures approved by the radiologists in accordance with written guidelines and protocols. Follows established Radiation safety practices.
- Compiles, maintains, and assembles images, electronic files, and requests for Radiologist interpretations.
- Uses correct imaging positions and techniques appropriate to age and size.
- Places proper annotation marker on exposure of film.
- Operates equipment to produce diagnostic images for all age groups for interpretation by a physician. Maintains proficiency in clinical and equipment competencies in all clinical settings.
- Assists physicians with securing and viewing images as needed for all available technologies.
- Provides radiologists with proper patient history documentation.
Radiology Support Services
- Provides daily support for the Radiology department and physicians.
- Operates PACS equipment including image workflow, archiving, autorouting, prefetching and other related activities.
- Ensures timely and complete capture of DICOM digital image data into the PACS system as well as network transmission, RIS validation and exceptions handling.
- Investigates, identifies, and prepares proposals to solve specific operational problems within all clinical operational areas, working closely with unit operations managers and division heads as well as involving the next level of administration as appropriate.
Equipment Usage
- Utilizes available systems to perform processes and promote departmental work flow.
- Burns CD's, prints film and problem solves as needed.
- Utilizes scanning capabilities into the EMR, RIS and Primordial systems as needed to ensure information is available to Radiologist and other users for expeditious patient care purposes.
