What You'll Do:
Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol
Report In Location: 1970 W. Broad St. Columbus 43223
Under the direct supervision of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Staff Lieutenant, plan & administer overall public information preparation & dissemination for the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) division within the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) (e.g., develop, proof, & issue new releases, public advisory announcements, etc.; prepare & advise on preparation of speeches, correspondences, reports, policy statements, legislative drafts, etc.); Establish priorities & supervise subordinate personnel (e.g., provide developmental opportunities & work direction, coach staff to foster development, monitor staff activities to ensure quality customer service & information technology security, evaluate performance, approve section staffing levels, recommend discipline, pre-screen applications & participate in interviews); Provide general direction & oversight of the Public Affairs Unit (e.g., update division social media accounts, manage projects used to promote highway & public safety issues, ensure unit is working towards achievement of agency/division goals &/or objectives; provide recommendations on public information programs based on new legislative requirements); Advise & consult with higher level personnel regarding public relation aspects, legislative changes, various task forces &/or councils, etc.; Develop & revise public relations program policies & procedures to streamline process & increase overall functionality of the unit; Provide on-call support for after-hours critical incidents.
Serve as a liaison for providing information on division program & activities (e.g., develop & present information & educational displays, brochures, programs, materials, &/or speeches; prepare & edit newsletters, articles, & other informational publications); Respond to inquiries &/or correspondences from other state agencies, general public, etc. regarding division activities & personnel.
Research & analyze reports & articles to keep abreast of current trends, problems, & progress; Perform other related duties as assigned (e.g., budget preparation, coordination of special projects, etc.)

Qualifications
Background Check Information
Completion of undergraduate core program in journalism or communication; 12 mos. exp. in public multi-media techniques & relations in field of journalism or communication; valid driver's license.
- Or 36 mos. exp. in field of journalism or communication dealing in public multi-media techniques & relations, public speaking, news writing, reporting & editing or technical report translation & communication dealing in public meetings; valid driver's license.
- Or 12 mos. exp. as Public Information Officer 1, 64421; valid driver's license.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Major Worker Characteristics
Knowledge of: Management; Employee Development; Supervision; Public Relations; Office Practices & Procedures (OSHP); Agency Policies & Procedures (ODPS); Social Media Networks; Effective Marketing/Communication; Budgeting.
