The staff writer provides dynamic content for all Catholic Review Media channels, including but not limited to The Catholic Review and CatholicReview.org. The staff writer will develop, report and write news and feature articles as well as in-depth centerspreads for the publications in a variety of formats in English and Spanish.

Job Responsibilities:

MAJOR TASKS:

• Gather and write news and feature stories as assigned
• Develop contacts and story ideas for beat areas, especially the archbishop and vicar bishops’ regions
• Generate ideas and contribute to weekly editorial meeting.

SECONDARY TASKS:

• Take photographs and videos
• Produce videos, audio reports and slideshows.
• Proofread copy
• Maintain blog that expands upon the stories in the newspaper
• Assist with social networking sites.

OCCASIONAL DUTIES:

• Upload stories to website
• Do interviews and newscasts for “Catholic Baltimore” radio show
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The staff writer should have at least two years in writing and reporting, in addition to a degree in communications or journalism, or equivalent work experience. Working knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church is necessary. Bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish required. Experience with social media, or digital media, HTML or other Web content management is a plus.

PHYSICAL SKILLS

Must possess ability to:

• Use Microsoft Word and other word processing programs
• Be flexible and flourish on deadline
• Have a cursory knowledge of HTML, blogging and production formats
• Understand video and sound editing software such as FinalCut, iMovie and Audacity are helpful, but not a normal part of the job responsibilities.
• Have access to personal transportation and valid driver’s license.

LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Must possess ability to:

• Bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish required.
• Operate a computer
