The Engineering Services team is structured to provide efficient and reliable architecture-engineering (AE) services to our U.S. Government clients for smaller engineering-only projects and task orders. Consisting of architectural, civil, control systems, electrical, mechanical, plant design, systems and project engineers, NS&E Engineering Services uses a “shared resources” model where team members work together in support of the full AE task order life cycle - industry engagement, proposal, and project delivery.


The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs.


Role Overview:

The Structural Steel Subject Matter Expert (SME) will work as part of the CSA (Civil, Structural and Architectural) team in the development and review of structures for all the NS&E projects as needed. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in steel structures, be able to develop novel approaches to constructability issues and help solve other structural technical problems for a first-of-a-kind NS&E projects.


  • Perform as subject matter expert (SME) in structural steel analysis & design including welded and bolted connections
  • Perform as SME in modularization of steel structures to support Construction
  • Originate/Review/approve complex structural engineering deliverables, such as structural steel calculations, structural drawings, specifications, material requisitions, supplier drawings and data, etc.
  • Preparation involvement/review of procurement and subcontract requisition documents and perform associated technical bid evaluations and award recommendations
  • Reviews and coordinates technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction
  • Prepare technical reports related to specific design issues
  • Act as a mentor or coach for CSA group engineers, architects, and designers
  • Lead technical discussions with the client, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, suppliers, construction, etc.
  • Assist in constructability reviews
  • Participate in and foster a work environment that is based on openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and job satisfaction
  • Perform Design reviews for NS&E Projects as needed.


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural or related), from an accredited university or college, with at least 13 years of progressive related experience.
  • BS/MS should emphasize structural analysis and design of steel structures
  • Have a U.S. Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Demonstrated experience in design/analysis/modularization of nuclear or industrial power structures.
  • Must be a US citizen


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment
  • Strong experience in methods of construction for steel structures
  • Detailed knowledge of the latest, state-of-the-art structural steel design/analysis/modularization techniques and innovation through ASCE & AISC technical committee involvement
  • Ability to express complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally
  • Ability to independently execute the detailed design of complex structures
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and MathCad
  • Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on project
  • Proficient in the use of structural analysis software GTSTRUDL or ANSYS
  • Thorough knowledge and application of AISC N690, ACI 349, ASCE 7 and IBC codes
  • Working knowledge of dynamic analysis techniques of response spectrum analysis and time-history analysis
  • Ability to resolve design issues with subordinates, suppliers, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with NRC regulated nuclear power projects
  • Knowledgeable in the principles of structural Engineering
  • Strong experience in methods of construction for steel structures
  • Experience with CADD applications, such as AutoCad
  • Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence
  • B-Cert- Principal Engineer (minimum certification)
  • Experience in construction interface and resolving field problems
