Salary: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
CDL Positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.
Location: This position is in INDOT's Crawfordsville District.
Role Overview: As the Survey Technician you will provide field survey support for the Design and Real Estate Sections. The main responsibility of the incumbent is to obtain survey data and performs calculations for the determination of precise measurements. This will be done by operating higher-level survey and GPS equipment and traversing and leveling operations. Additionally, you will plot field data using CADD software for the preparation of survey drawings. This position also assists with snow and ice removal operations when needed.
About the Job:
This position provides support to the Right-of-Way Engineering Section in the Capital Program Management Division and ensures accuracy and compliance with current policies, procedures and standards.
A Day in the Life:
- Reviews and evaluates parcel packets and right-of-way plans submitted by consultants in order to ensure accuracy and compliance with current policies, procedures and standards;
- Researches and compiles information from state, county and municipal records to abstract properties to be acquired for projects;
- Drafts or plots survey drawings from field data or office calculations to prepare legal descriptions, conveyance instruments, parcel plats, etc.;
- Prepares parcel packets to be loaded into ERMS;
- Performs all tasks associated with Property Management and Encroachment including ordering utility disconnects and asbestos inspections on demolition properties;
- Interacts with and assists customers with issues and concerns;
- Maintains files;
- Scans As-Build plans;
- Operates, maintains and adjusts all types of survey instruments, measuring devices and data recording equipment (e.g. levels, total stations, data-collectors, GPS);
- Utilizes INDOT computers systems (e.g. LRS, SPMS, ERMS, CADD, COGO, InRoads, and Microsoft Office);
- Attends field checks, meetings and training sessions as required;
- Subject to emergency call out for snow and ice removal activities; and,
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need for Success:
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Associates degree in the survey technology field preferred, or a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the survey field;
- Real Estate License preferred;
- Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license;
- Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or have the ability to obtain within 90 days;
- Knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and surveying;
- Skill in the operation of all types of surveying instruments;
- Specialized knowledge of surveying principles, techniques, theories and practices;
- Considerable knowledge of real estate and surveying terminology and forms;
- Working knowledge of engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design and construction of roads, bridges, dams, buildings and related structures;
- Working knowledge of laws pertaining to surveying, Right-of-Way Engineering and Real Estate;
- Ability to interpret and apply technical and procedural principles and standards;
- Ability to use research methods in gathering data;
- Ability to apply principles to solve practical, everyday problems;
- Ability to read, copy and record figures and gather, collate and classify data;
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, drawings, etc.; and,
- Ability to demonstrate physical agility.
