About the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership:
While Massachusetts is consistently ranked as one of the top states for education results in the country, we have one of the highest and most persistent opportunity gaps. The Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP) - established in 2015 as a collaboration between Springfield Public Schools (SPS), the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and the Springfield Education Association (SEA) – seeks to improve the longitudinal life outcomes of the more than 5,000 students in our 16 middle and high schools.
As a “zone” of schools within the city of Springfield, SEZP’s approach draws on a deep and embedded partnership with the school district and local teachers’ union, while harnessing the flexibility and innovation found in autonomous school models. As a result, each school within SEZP is accorded significant school-based autonomies - in curriculum, talent, calendar, schedule, and budget – while being held accountable for realizing achievement gains for historically marginalized students. In all of our work, SEZP is in pursuit of equity and anti-racism acknowledging the systemic oppression our students and families encounter daily and working to disrupt these provision gaps urgently and courageously.
Candidates Needed for Unprecedented Early College Innovation
The SEZP is launching a one-of-a-kind high school approach exclusively dedicated to early college as a force to disrupt long-standing economic oppression and institutionalized racism in our city. All SEZP high schools will dramatically increase college matriculation, persistence, and, ultimately, economic justice for all students by offering significant credit accrual (up to 60 credits), attainment of a free Associate’s degree alongside a high school diploma, specialization in specific, lucrative career pathways (e.g., IT and Computer Science, Education, Bio Tech, Healthcare, Criminal Justice, Digital Media Arts and Social Media, Cybersecurity), and access to a wide portfolio of higher education partners ranging from urban and suburban, two-year and four-year, local and state-wide, and large and small. Our IHE partners include Worcester State University, Springfield Technical Community College, Quinsigamond Community College, Westfield State University, Holyoke Community College, American International College, and Bay Path University.
The SEZP calls upon skilled and passionate educators to co-found this unprecedented opportunity for students by joining one or more of our Early College high schools as adjunct faculty (full-time or part-time) across a multitude of content areas including liberal arts, math and science, applied and fine arts, healthcare, education, criminal justice, and technology and technical areas, including digital and media arts, computer science, advanced manufacturing, and more. No prior experience as an adjunct is needed. Instructors from all content disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Adjunct Faculty Educators (AFE) will work to ensure linguistic and racial equity through academic rigor and personalized supports that empower students and families in maximizing credit accrual, developing personalized college and career plans, and/or supporting scholars in obtaining an Associate’s degree by their high school graduation, if they choose.
Job Responsibilities
Adjunct faculty educators will accomplish the following:
- Instruct several college courses through one of our many higher education partners on our high school campuses
- Provide college level rigor in the course content with extensive support from university and high school leadership teams
- Provide support sessions, advising, and office hours to ensure enrolled students have access to intervention and additional resources to ensure success
- Enact anti-racist instructional practices that ensure students own the learning
- Work closely with a team of student support team members, mentors, and interventionists to amplify student success
- Engage with families as partners in the learning around successes, challenges, and problem-solving on behalf of our scholars
Position Qualifications
- Master's Degree required
- Strong commitment to the philosophy and efficacy of providing early college access to scholars in marginalized populations required
- Experience teaching or advising in a higher education context preferred
- Experience teaching at the high school level or experience working with high school-age students preferred
- Appropriate content/program area and grade level educator license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education required (Educators who are not yet licensed by MA DESE in the appropriate content/program area and grade level may be eligible for a licensure waiver and are still encouraged to apply.)
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
- Experience as an active anti-racist or advocate for equity preferred
