The Telemetry Tech/PCT functions under the direction of the professional nurse. The Telemetry Tech/PCT is responsible for cardiac monitor observation and reporting of cardiac rhythm changes to the nursing staff for further investigation when indicated. The Telemetry Tech/PCT will demonstrate knowledge appropriate to the age of the patients served. Demonstration of knowledge will include principles of growth and development and interpretation of information and data to identify the patient’s cardiac monitoring needs. Responsible for applying skills and techniques common to the practice of a telemetry technician.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under direction of the Director of Nursing Services, the Telemetry Tech/PCT is responsible for the overall quality of acute, med/surg. and critical patient care. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Monitor, interpret and report data from telemetry monitor systems.
- Recognize rhythms with the potential to alter the patient’s physiology and report to licensed staff immediately.
- Document rhythm status per routine, for all changes and upon request during emergent patient interventions.
- Report changes in cardiac rhythms & pulse oximetry data to appropriate licensed personnel.
- Follow procedure for application to patient and troubleshooting monitoring equipment.
- Perform clerical, technical and communication functions as directed by the licensed staff.
- Act as a PCT and Unit Clerk, as needed.
- Maintain stock supplies for monitoring area.
- Correctly identifies and uses appropriately personal protective equipment.
- Professionally answers telephone in a friendly and helpful manner. Accurately assesses call information and takes appropriate and concise messages.
- Answers and responds to all call lights promptly and professionally.
- Implementation of Joint Commission, CMS, and State facility guidelines and standards.
- Collaboration with nursing peers, the interdisciplinary team and others who influence healthcare.
- Creation of an environment and culture that enables the facility to fulfill its mission by meeting or exceeding its goals, conveying the facility mission to all staff, holding staff accountable for performance, motivating staff to improve performance and being responsible for the measurement, assessment, and continuous improvement of the department.
- Creates a compassionate, supportive, safe and therapeutic environment for patients, families and staff. Develops therapeutic relationships with patient and family and maintains appropriate boundaries. Manages both emotional and physical pain with the aim of promoting comfort and healing and preventing unnecessary suffering.

- Knowledge and understanding of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care applicable to the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management.
- Knowledge of medical and professional ethics and patient privacy rights.
- Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.
- Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to observe changes in the medical condition of patients and effectively communicate these changes to other nursing staff members.
- Ability to provide age-specific, quality, patient-centered care to all patients through the standards of nursing practice with sensitivity and respect for the diversity of human experience and to develop, evaluate, implement and, as necessary, modify a patient care plan to meet the needs of individual patients.

- Show evidence of continuing education in the area of nursing, medical assistant, certified nurse assistant.

- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 100 lbs. to move.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, and bend daily.
- Ability to reach, turn, and twist above and below the waist.
- Ability to stand and walk the facility

Qualifications
- High School Graduate or hold a GED certificate required.
- Certified as a telemetry technician by recognized program or equivalent work experience preferred
- CNA, MA, or Nursing Student preferred.
- Current BLS/ACLS required
- Maintain current knowledge and adhere to appropriate regulatory standards (i.e., Joint Commission, Medicare, Medicaid, employment regulations, Board of Nurse Examiners).
