By joining our District 5, Engineering Support Branch as a Transportation Engineering Technologist I in Jefferson County, you’ll have the opportunity to oversee activities on minor construction and maintenance projects.

Holders of the Transportation Engineering Technologist I position will complete tasks such as:
  • Inspect work of mowing contractors for completion and compliance
  • Inspect work of other roadside contractors for completion and compliance
  • Respond to inquiries from the public
  • Ensure work is performed to contract specifications
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Reviewing and managing contracts
  • Providing contractors feedback on work performed
  • Estimating contract costs and quantities
  • Writing uncomplicated technical reports
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Education in a technical field
  • Contract management
  • Construction management
  • Maintenance management
Holders of this position will travel throughout the district’s eight counties to inspect the work of contractors. They may encounter rough terrain, crawl on the ground, crawl into tight spaces, lift heavy equipment, and may also drive in inclement weather while doing inspections.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial technology, industrial drafting, design technology or construction technology. OR Graduate with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: None

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: 1. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree OR an associate degree in an engineering field OR 2. High school OR 3. High school

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: 1. Must have three years of engineering-related experience with the first education option above; OR 2. Must have six years of engineering-related experience in which case related technical or vocational training will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years with the second education option above; OR 3. Must have four years of bridge inspection experience under the supervision of a Qualified Inspection Team Leader, plus successful completion of a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course with the third education option above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possess and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
