Transportation Router – Metropolitan School District of Washingtown Township (MSDWT)

Nature of work and purpose

TransPar Group, which provides consulting services and management services to school districts across the United States, is seeking an individual to serve as a full time router in support of school bus route management operations in Metropolitan School District of Washington Township (MSDWT) in Indianapolis, Indiana. Job responsibilities include using a software routing application (Tyler Technologies VersaTrans) to develop and manage efficient and effective routing schemes. It is imperative to the success of the MSDWT transportation program that this critical function assures that service levels are upheld in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Additionally, the nature of this work requires hearty organization and knowledge of, and proactive use of confidential student data, software platforms, updated maps, while maintaining proper records, understanding time and distance performance metrics, ridership changes and capacity use, and other operational duties as assigned while also adhering to federal, state, and local guidelines in provision of student transportation services. The candidate will be expected to work independently and within a cohesive office team.

Position Overview

MSD Washington Township Schools is located in the northern section of Indianapolis, Indiana and Marion County. With 15 schools serving nearly 11,000 students, the district comprises a dynamic community with a broad diversity of cultures, religions, ethnic groups, races, and socioeconomic levels.

This position with TransPar is responsible for project expertise and will plan, develop, adjust, and analyze school bus routes and schedules in the department’s automated route planning and optimization software program within assigned geographic areas across the district. The position also provides data and data analysis technical support and consultation to transportation leadership on route optimization to improve efficiency and effectiveness of bus trips and route schedules; maintain the quality and accuracy of student / vehicle / driver information and all other required metadata to ensure that the software program is operating at an optimal level; collect, organize, and analyze school and student data; and, prepare reports as required.

Duties and responsibilities

• Work collaboratively and independently as a member of an integrated office environment
• Follow prescribed departmental analytical techniques and use prescribed analytical tools to organize, manipulate, synthesize, and analyze source geospatial financial, and logistical data
• Assist with customer communications and management
• Establish routes utilizing VersaTrans routing program, assuring adaptation of existing routes to changing district demographics, contract agreements and service level expectations
• Coordinate, schedule, and maintain bus routes along with everchanging guidelines and local programming
• Organize and assure that all bus routing, special vehicle, or third party vendor solutions surrounding Specialized Education, Medically Fragile, McKinney-Vento, and Foster programming are well organized, cost effective, and executed as designed and regulated
• Assure all routes adhere to local Department of Education requirements and local School Board Policy per safety requirements and guidelines as it pertains to bus routing and the transportation of school age children
• Monitor routes for equity of service to students throughout the district
• Record, copy, file, and distribute route information, instructions, bulletins, notices, memos, and messages to staff and drivers as needed
• Notify driver, students, and parents of any changes in the student’s transportation such as pick-up, drop-off location, and change in bus number or pick-up and drop-off times
• Maintain VersaTrans including updating maps, performing and safeguarding accurate and streamlined student data downloads, and running routine maintenance programs
• Implement and oversee route auditing protocols which may include monthly student counts, ride alongs or frequent video review
• Provide data as needed for development of company reports surrounding system key performance measurements, strategy, or decision making elements
• Periodically visit bus stops to ensure safety of unload/load/and stop locations
• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills, and ability

• Advanced knowledge of VersaTransor other software platforms utilized for student transportation needs
• Effective communication skills with the ability to interact not only with leadership and teammates, but also with district administration, principals, campus staff, parents, and students as needed
• Working knowledge of Department of Education rules and regulations, local policies, procedures, and expectations is helpful
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local rules and regulations surrounding student transportation is expected
• Ability to multi-task and compartmentalize in a high pressure environment
• Ability to work under time constraints and prioritize effectively while maintaining composure and responding to tasks, questions, and concerns appropriately
• Ability to quickly gain knowledge of a variety of computer-based programs to facilitate job responsibilities
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information at all times, understanding and acting under the guidelines of Federal Law, FERPA, regarding student privacy laws, as well as employee confidentiality law
• Ability to receive and give written and verbal instructions effectively
• Ability to read and understand documents, including policies and procedures manuals, as well as determine logical and repeatable process flow documentation
• Proficient map reading skills; GIS knowledge is helpful
• Proficient skills in operating a personal computer, utilizing Microsoft Office applications, Google, internet maps, and basic internet navigation

Qualifications

• Experience in VersaTransor similar routing software is strongly preferred
• Experience in the transportation routing or logistics industry with demonstrated and verifiable analytical experience
• Compliance and regulation experience a plus
• Verifiable experience in computer hardware and software troubleshooting and repair
• High School diploma or equivalent; college degree in a Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Information Technology, or Business (logistics or operations focus) is highly desirable
• High level of aptitude for software applications usage and development preferred
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Working conditions

This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position. Typical work day is set by the General Manager. There may be times when arriving earlier and staying later is necessary. Daily, in-person attendance is required.

Physical requirements

This position requires minimal physical tasks to perform duty as assigned. Many of the assigned tasks will require the ability to sit at a computer screen for long periods of time, fully utilize features of routing software, and execute the capability to retrieve and organize information, communicate effectively, and input/export data accurately.

Salary

$50K-$60K, varies based upon experience
