Position Summary:
The Associate State Director of the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides leadership and operational oversight of SBDCs educational services and advising assistance provided via six centers and two satellite offices statewide. This position is responsible for the planning, administration, and coordination of day-to-day operational functions of the Alaska SBDC. Activities include defining, developing, and implementing required projects; arranging and scheduling new programs and events; advancing appropriate advertising, promotion, and marketing materials; contacting community leaders, university, state, and local officials, and analyzing needs to ensure appropriate coordination of services. This position will work in close collaboration with the SBDC Center Directors and other SBDC staff as well as the broader University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), Business Enterprise Institute (BEI) suite of programs and University of Alaska personnel as requested. Functions performed under long-range administrative direction. SBDC centers are located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Soldotna, and Wasilla. Affiliated offices located in Homer, and Seward. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Position requires periodic travel in-state and out-of-state, and occasional work outside of standard working hours. - Ability to supervise with proven leadership abilities. Ability to establish effective interpersonal relations.
- Ability to coordinate with staff over long distances.
- Advanced experience working with programs designed to assist small businesses at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Exemplary analytical skills (including problem-solving, prioritization, and process improvement).
- Apply exemplary project/program management skills, including the ability to effectively plan, direct and integrate all aspects of a project, ensuring that work progresses toward achieving established goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of strategic planning processes to include short term and long term strategic goals.
- Ability to develop and modify policies and procedures. Resource development skills; strong familiarity with government programs; high degree of business community awareness.
- Ability to identify fundraising opportunities and project partnerships.
- Ability to conceptualize and create programs. Ability to evaluate information and make sound recommendations.
- Ability to communicate complex rules and regulations and relevant changes with the ability to make difficult concepts easy to understand.
- Significant computer operating skills required.
- Significant understanding of Word and Excel required.
- Extensive Cloud technology and Google Workplace Suite experience required.
- Google Workplace Administration experience preferred.
- Both in-state and out of state travel is required.
- Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are sometimes required.
- Demonstrated skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships within a complex organizational structure.
- Knowledge of Alaska including business and community culture.
- Understanding of current small business challenges and technical assistance resources.
- Google Workplace platform administrative experience
- Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations relevant to small business.
- Business consulting/mentoring experience
- Experience working with the banking/finance industry
- Experience with the statewide innovation/entrepreneurship communities
Master’s degree in business administration or related field and five (5) or more years of experience leading business development support and/or entrepreneurship and project management leadership. Specific and relatable prior SBDC operations management experience desired. Applicants having an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience are also considered.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have detailed knowledge of the SBDC program
- Demonstrated experience working with programs designed to assist small businesses at the federal, state, and local levels, especially within the national SBDC network.
- Experience and knowledge working in both university and/or government environments. Must fully understand grant management expectations, processes, and procedures.
- History/experience working with SBA district, regional, national offices
- Administrative/Advanced level experience working within the Neoserra database.
- Strong project development/management skills
- Ability to build successful teams, supervise staff, and resolve interpersonal conflict.
- Ability to independently prioritize and direct workload, work under pressure, managing multiple deadlines, and deliverables.
- Knowledge of processes for conducting research and managing data for program evaluation.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, working as a team member.
- Ability to lead, and supervise staff as well as indirectly supervise peers across a complex organization.
- Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate effectively the policies, rules, and regulations of a complex federal program that may face ongoing changes to said rules and policies.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Significant computer operating skills required. Significant understanding of Word and Excel. Extensive Cloud technology, digital file maintenance and Google Workplace Suite experience required.
This is a full-time, 12-month, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
