Job Summary:
Under broad supervision, this position provides a variety of maintenance and installation services to ensure the integrity of the University electrical and life safety systems. These include:
- Making changes and enhancements to these existing systems to satisfy regulatory agencies and University growth.
- Overseeing, supervising and leading up to three individuals consistently, and at certain periods of time more than three, in the electrical, mechanical, fire alarm and emergency technical areas.
- Assuring all emergency and routine work is scheduled and completed.
- Assisting the Director of Operations in budgeting and recommending maintenance priorities and procedures in the electrical disciplines.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Essentials:
35% Function as a supervisor.
- Oversee the work of up to three staff members to include an apprentice level electrical helper and two journeyman electricians.
- Plans and performs routine and non-routine maintenance, repairs and installations of University power and lighting systems; which include, but not limited to, main distribution, feeders and conductors, branch circuits and end user devices.
- Oversees and performs routine and non-routine maintenance, repairs and installation of University life safety and security systems which include electronic fire and smoke detection systems, monitoring and signaling devices, fire department interface, and emergency lighting systems.
- Schedule and perform preventative maintenance procedures on all electro-mechanical systems, components including transformers, switch gear, motors, motor control centers, sub-panels, branch-circuits, lighting and sound.
- Supervise entire Utilities section when the Superintendent of Utilities is not available.
20% Provide design support and ensure contractor accountability as needed for new system installation for all electrical/mechanical installations but not limited to life safety systems, high voltage distribution, lighting and power, lighting protection and EMS. Assure all building as-builds prints are updated or modified when renovation or upgrades occur.
15% Participate in performing routine and non-routine maintenance, repairs, and installation of University wide Energy Management Systems. Assure proper contractor and/or staff management of full building lighting re-lamps, preventative maintenance procedures, and all required testing and inspections to ensure timeliness, proper functioning, occupant safety and meet campus-wide energy conservation guidelines.
10% Assures the University follows pertinent Federal, State and local regulatory agencies codes and regulations, which include NFPA, NEC, Local Fire Authority, and OSHA. Responsible for recording required/pertinent information regarding service or planned maintenance and/or items of importance for the electrical staff including documentation of appropriate department findings, work results, disciplinary actions, times sheets and other required information.
10% Performs as a project manager overseeing electrical capital maintenance projects. Handles projects cradle to grave as assigned.
5% Complies with University and departmental safety rules and training activities.
- Assures electrical staff also complies and participates in all training activities.
- Operate and utilizes tools, equipment and vehicles in a safe and workman-like manner and ensures staff does the same.
- Assists in performing snow removal activities as needed.
- Performs related duties as necessary to support the Regis mission as assigned.
5% Participates in emergency and call back program to abate facilities problems through University communication system, switchboard, radio, emergency cellular phone or pager.

- Routinely makes environmental and system related decisions and is a valuable part of new construction and improvement to Regis University buildings.
- Must be able to analytically and objectively assign work and assure safety to the public at large, technicians performing the work and property.
SCOPE of AUTHORITY:
- Make budget requests, order supplies, ensures the maintenance of a proper inventory, works independently and protects Regis University from environmental and safety hazards, direct subcontractors in carrying out their duties in boiler and mechanical rooms as well as in the classroom and office environment typical of a University setting.
COMMUNICA TION:
- Ability to converse with a wide range of people, i.e., Physical Plant staff, supervisors, electrical helper, customers, vendors, sales representatives, inspectors, contractors, insurance inspectors, health and safety people.
- This person must have good written and oral communication skills and must be able to handle critical issues in a calm, constructive manner.
RESULTS of ACTION:
- Unsuccessful completion of responsibilities will have serious negative effect on life safety and environmental comforts. Also, directly affects and impacts from a risk and usability perspective the infrastructure integrity and functionality of all buildings and physical spaces.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
- High School graduate or GED equivalent and a Colorado Journeyman Electrical License is required. Masters electrical license is preferred.
- Masters electrical license preferred.
- NICET and CAD certifications preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Six (6) years' experience in the electrical field or closely related field.
- A broad range of electrical and fire alarm experience is needed to solve problems and plan maintenance.
- A Colorado Journeyman Electrical License is required.
- Completion of all four NICET levels preferred or ability to attain the certifications for each level.
- CAD operation knowledge is preferred to allow incumbent to modify electrical as built drawings based on actual in the field changes that frequently occur, at times on a daily basis.
SKILLS:
- High level.
- Use of power and hand tools, electrical, plumbing, heating and mechanical.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to effectively plan, sequence and coordinate activities related to construction, modification, and repair of electrical infrastructure and end use devices.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Requires an astute awareness of safety knowledge and practices in the electrical field.
- Knowledge to perform electrical calculations to avoid overloading and determine proper conductor sizing as needed for Journeyman level work at a minimum.
- Needs basic asbestos awareness knowledge and general knowledge of building and construction hazards.
- Must have a solid knowledge and method of proceeding for reliable troubleshooting process.
- Must understand the basic principles of supervision understand and apply University policies, and procedures.
- Have knowledge of how to perform routine work of other electro - mechanical trades such as plumbing, heating and ventilation.
- Provide support to other tradesmen in their daily effort when called upon.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to combine decision making, authority, communication and skills with knowledge to have a positive effect on results of action.
- Must be able to read, manipulate and interpret blue prints, schematics, on-line and through the use of shop drawings.
PHYSICAL and MENTAL:
- Lifting & Carrying: Essential. Easy to very hard. Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. daily.
- Pushing & Pulling: Must be able to push/pull 100 lbs. or more daily.
- Body Position: Must bend, stoop, climb ladders, lift, carry 50 lbs. or more daily. Full range.
- Body Movements: Must bend, stoop, reach, climb, twist, walk, and work over head. Full range.
- Hand Use: Full range, need good use of dexterity.
- Sense of Touch: Helpful for hot and cold touch on piping for heat, air-conditioning, bleeder valves, controls, etc., daily.
- Hearing: Essential. Radios, phones, machinery, verbal instructions, etc.
- Vision: Essential: Read controls, set temperatures, lighting that is out at night.
- Mental: Mathematics: (Counting, adding, subtracting, etc.) Essential. Basic addition, subtraction and multiplication and other math essentials for electronic calculations, setting clocks, and other controls, etc. Daily Remembering: (Recalling information.) Essential. Supervising activities of others, obtaining supplies, messages, customer service, work orders, etc. Need to call on past experience and apply to present task.
- Language Ability: (Reading, writing, speaking.) Essential. Need to read and write, understand blue prints, maintenance manuals as they exist on campus. Good oral and written communications.
- Reasoning: (Judgment and decision making.) Essential. Make decisions; must be able to apply sound judgment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions for up to an hour at a time- temperatures exceeding 110F or as low as -10F.
Must be able to work in high areas from ladders, roof tops, aerial work platforms and/or scaffolding as well as environments that are dusty, dirty, wet, cold, hot, odors, etc.
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to work on and maintain computerized maintenance systems and create spreadsheets for proper record keeping, analysis and input of data for planning future and repeating events, and maintenance priority planning.
- It is an essential requirement of this position to have and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License as well as maintain insurability through the University funded insurance carrier by maintaining excellent driving records.
- Any changes in the incumbent's driving record at any time during his or her employment must be reported immediately to his or her supervisor.
