Job Summary

The position of Victim Advocate (Court Based) performs trauma-informed empowerment-based advocacy to assist and support victims of domestic violence through various court proceedings associated with criminal court. To perform a variety of clerical and support functions for the
Victim/Witness Advocate program, including providing support to victims of crimes; acting as an advocate for their rights and protection; providing staff support in the prosecution of criminal cases, and performing a variety of clerical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. This position engages in broader systems advocacy with criminal court systems to create meaningful safety-based services for victims /survivors while ensuring perpetrator accountability. Primary Responsibilities

  • Working in criminal court locations to engage victim and survivor clients while adhering to strict confidentiality requirements.
  • Advocate for victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and their children on a case by case basis, providing ongoing crisis intervention, assessment, and continuing advocacy.
  • Conducts ongoing safety planning with survivors addressing changing needs, fluctuating circumstances and as access to resources evolve.
  • Complete appropriate documents by interviewing victim or assist victim with completion of these

documents. Provide encouragement and information and refer to other agencies when appropriate.

  • Contact and interview witnesses in assigned cases; may accompany victims to court as needed.
  • Provide background information to prosecutor; may assist with various aspects of plea negotiations prior to trial. Maintain records and reference materials concerning victim and witness advocacy.
  • Assist in the preparation of criminal files for prosecution; screen cases; order records; notify officers and subpoena witnesses; ensure availability of evidence.
  • Assist in the location of witnesses; contact appropriate agencies for criminal histories.
  • Respond to inquiries concerning assigned cases and direct inquiries to appropriate agencies.
  • Prepare court dockets; form pleadings and maintain legal files.
  • Assist the victim of domestic violence with all necessary preparation for their cases and accompanies survivors to court providing support while promoting a SafeNest presence as court observers.
  • Participate in networking opportunities to build relationships to further understanding of domestic violence dynamics and its trauma impact on victims and their families.
  • Promote victim advocacy services to court representatives to reflect SafeNest services as an enhancement to court system services and goals.
  • Maintains accurate client records utilizing designated client databases, conducts timely data collection and reporting.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field or equivalent experience
  • Must have completed or successfully complete a minimum of 40 hours of initial basic advocacy training.
  • Two years’ experience in working with victims of domestic abuse or sexual assault
  • Knowledgeable and confident operating under confidentiality requirements and familiar with ethics to client interaction
  • Understanding of providing culturally relevant services
  • Must be informed about empowerment, economic justice, harm-reduction

  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and maintenance of legal documents.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Ability to: Interact effectively with a variety of clients. Maintain confidentiality of information. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Provide service in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries both verbally and in writing and communicate clearly and concisely. Learn to correctly interpret and apply policies and procedures. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work with clients experiencing stressful situations in a sensitive, caring manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
